FITTING SEND OFF FOR WAYNE & JACKIE NICHOLLS
Wayne and Jackie were interred in the grounds of Enfield's Crematorium/Cemetery after an emotional but fitting service.

There were hundreds of fans in attendance in addition to Wayne and Jackie's close family, relatives and friends from the Enfield area. Their children (who were marvellous) were there too, which all added to the poignant, heart-breaking tragedy. There were so many mourners that the tiny chapel was full to bursting and many could not even get inside. The priest remarked upon the astonishing turn out, adding that it was obvious that Wayne & Jackie were much loved and admired and that they genuinely touched many lives. Wayne’s sister, Colin Pryce-Jones of the Rapiers and another lady read touching poems, whilst Wayne's brother Robert gave a choked emotional address and later led the prayers with great dignity. Two tracks which Wayne wrote and recorded with Jet Black - "Moonlight" (Instro) and "Please Stay Sincere" (vocal) were played at the beginning and the end of the service. Naturally, many tears were shed - emotions had been building for almost three weeks - they had to be released.

The Rapiers have many fans & friends worldwide - and that includes many celebrities from the 60s and beyond. The fact that so many of them wanted to genuinely pay their last respects was also truly remarkable. It seems that many of Wayne and Jackie's relatives simply didn't realise just how Wayne was held in such high esteem (partly, one assumes, because of Wayne's self-deprecating modesty). There were many from the Shads/Rapiers/Instro/Rn'R/Beat fans present. I'll list some that I know - there are others that I've seen at many gigs down the years - but I'm terrible at recalling their names, only seeing them intermittently; I'll get Colin to help me out in a subsequent posting. Known to me (and many others) were Roy and Kathie Cresswell, Helen and Steve Terrell, plus Rapiers fan Jim Burgess. As for the more famous, there were quite a few including: Bruce Welch (accompanied by Howard Sheldon), Clem Cattini, John Leyton, Mike Berry, Cliff Hall, Warren Bennett, Wee Willie Harris, Mike Read, Jimmy Jemain, Mac Poole and Janet and Jet Harris. Dell Richardson from Fury Records (and Radio Caroline) was there plus, of course, the current Rapiers Colin, Nathan, John and, of course, Janet Pryce-Jones, ex- Rapiers Brad Dallaston and Dave Lawes, as well as Billy Egan & members of Jet Black. There were others (eg a member of Vanity Fayre) who I've missed.

Many people later crowded into Harringay FC's clubhouse to talk about Wayne & Jackie & renew acquaintances ('twas ever thus at such events). Yes it was terrible in many ways, certainly moving. Unfortunately funerals represent one of the great communal 'events' (along with christenings, weddings etc) - the rites of passage in all of our lives. In terms of such occasions - today was memorable. I know it's a cliché, but sometimes words are inadequate, it was a fitting send off for this lovely couple so cruelly taken from us all so early in their lives. There's an old adage, "Count your age in friends not years" and the priest said that it was important for Wayne & Jackie to be surrounded by our love and prayers. They assuredly were. Wayne and Jackie RIP - "See You In Dreamland Tonight".

God Bless

Rob Bradford

A GUIDE TO THE SHADOWS AND HANK MARVIN ON CD

Malcolm Campbell's 4th book (this time in collaboration with Les Woosey) is a radical and hefty (576 page) update of his popular 1999 CD Guide.

The 2005 version retains much of the character of the original, but also breaks new ground in a number of key areas: over 400 cover shots in colour; a radically new style of Shadows Discography capped by a list (hitherto unavailable) of "first stereos"; a detailed survey of variant versions and mixes (some newly discovered); a profile of each release; exhaustive listings of all tracks found on CD from 1984 to 2004, with data on all recordings by the group with Cliff Richard. The book also boasts some excellent pictures from photographers John Hank Humphrey, Angélique von Söhsten and David Hawley.

Malcolm and Les have obviously carried out countless hours of painstaking research to produce a truly outstanding work of reference for us. This is an absolute fount of knowledge for all Shads enthusiasts!

The book has been written in such a style that makes it easily accessible to anyone, not just the avid collectors and "trainspotters" who will be delighted by the detailed listings. The CD listings alone makes it worth every penny of the asking price, but when you add in the colour artwork from the CD sleeves and the selections of tour photographs, you have a desirable reference work worthy of a place on any fan's bookcase or coffee table.

The level of information provided is astonishing; recording/session dates, personnel, full composer credits etc., etc. All of this now covers Hank, M, W & F, Cliff (+ Shads) and... the Shadows themselves. Additionally Malcolm & Les have spent hundreds (and I mean literally hundreds) of hours listening to every single CD in great detail. they have come up with a definitive list of stereo takes, mono takes, mock - stereo variants, enhanced mono, reversed stereo images, different mixes, mis-mastered tracks, alternative versions etc., etc (as well as precisely where to find them all! Whilst
I'm not into buying every version of every track by the guys, it is fascinating to discover eg, that there are an incredible number of versions of 'Wonderful Land' available!

If you already own Malcolm Campbell's previous guide to the Shadows & Hank Marvin on CD - then do you really need a copy of the new edition? The answer has to be a resounding and emphatic 'YES'!!  ! Malcolm and Les have produced a magnificent
record of the Shadows' musical output!. It's one book that every Shadows fan should own. Truly indispensable.

Brian Bennett

AIM HIGH
A new Brian Bennett CD called "Aim High - Brian Bennett At KPM: 1973 - 1976" was released in November on RPM Records. http://www.rpmrecords.co.uk/

Brian did a phenomenal amount of library work for KPM in the Seventies - both as a composer and a performer. He worked with musicians including Dave Richmond and Steve Gray producing authentic original material that could often be heard on TV. A few of Brian's KPM tracks appeared recently on the "Shut It!" music from "The Sweeney" CD but generally his KPM work hasn't been commercially available. This new compilation CD features entirely Brian's own compositions and I would imagine will be a very welcome early Christmas present for fans of his work.
Tracklisting: Sidetrack/ Boogie Juice/Aim High/Sportsday/Ergon/In Motion/Prelude and Groove Part 2/Metropolis Suite Part 1/Reflections On A Misty Morning/Sunset/Honey Days/Glass Tubes/Cobweb/Traffic Patterns/Speed And Efficiency/It’s A Crazy World/Grand Funk/Keep Truckin’/Rocking Horse.

Warren Bennett
Picture taken by Dave Dixon. York Barbican (Hank's 2000 tour)

Last year, Warren wrote and recorded the music score for a movie starring Keeley Hawes going by the name of "Chaos and Cadavers". (You can see photos from the sessions on the Vibratos' website - click here).
The soundtrack album should be available soon. He is currently also working on a series of library albums
.

During 2003, Warren appeared with Dick Plant as the VIBRATOS at the PIPELINE CONVENTION on Easter Sunday and later at the French fan club event at Versailles as well as Bruce's SHADOWMANIA in September. Special 5 track CD-EPs were produced for each of these occasions and may be ordered from Leo's Den.

Following from the highly acclaimed GHOST OF OLD COMPTON STREET, the Vibratos released their second album THE CAPUCCINO KID in 2003 and a third, entitled "Tornado Alley" in 2004. Each features the usual mix of original compositions and covers performed in The Vibratos' style.

Full details of these CDs, including track listings and soundclips, can be found on their website www.vibratos.co.uk

The Ghost Of Old Compton Street

On 20th October 2005, The Vibratos announced that they will not be doing any more live performances or recording again (at least for the near future). The following is taken from their website www.vibratos.co.uk

Since Tornado Alley was released, we’ve both been busy with various projects aside from the band.

As you will know, Warren joined The Shadows on their successful European leg of ‘The Final Tour’ and, since then, has been writing and recording for various film and television projects for the UK and America. Dick has been involved in his usual engineering duties, which keep him tied up for fairly lengthy periods of time.

With all this going on, and with many more projects for us both in the pipeline, we’ve decided to put The Vibratos on the back burner for the time being.

CD Re-issues of the "Greatest Hits" LP from 1963 and More Hits from 1965 were released in April. They feature mono and stereo takes of all tracks. Some of the mono versions are making their first appearance on official CD releases. "More Hits" also has two bonus tracks - "The Warlord" and "A Place in the Sun" whilst "Greatest Hits" has "Quatermassters (sic) stores" as a bonus

The following information provided by Shadows expert Jim Nugent, will be of special interest to collectors and "completists"

The stereo/mono re-release of "The Shadows' Greatest Hits" and "More Hits!" on CD is excellent news (and I remember suggesting it in "Pipeline" when reviewing the tail-end of EMI's series of Shadows mono/stereo Digipaks a few years ago!).

Just to clarify things, with TSGH having Quatermasster's Stores as a bonus track and with "More Hits!" being supplemented by The Warlord and A Place In The Sun, this means that a total of fifteen tracks will be making their CD debut in mono and that a further three will be making their UK mono CD debut.
Those latter three tracks are Apache and Quatermasster's Stores (each of which was released in mono on the French CD "Préférences", which itself is not easy to find in the UK) and The Warlord, which has seen the light of day on an Australian CD.

The other fifteen making their absolute first appearance on CD in the original mono mixes will be:

1. Man Of Mystery
2. The Stranger
3. FBI (always previously issued in mock-stereo on CD)
4. 36-24-36
5. The Savage
6. Stars Fell On Stockton
7. The Rise And Fall Of Flingel Bunt
8. Rhythm'n'Greens
9. Genie With The Light Brown Lamp
10. The Drum Number
11. The Lute Number
12. Mary Anne
13. Stingray
14. Don't Make My Baby Blue and
15. A Place In The Sun.

If it hadn't been for the mid-price release of 2003: "A's, B's and EP's" [sic] and other earlier odd mono tracks on worldwide compilations, a further twelve tracks would be enjoying their mono CD debuts:

Midnight, The Frightened City, Peace Pipe, Wonderful Land (overdub), Guitar Tango, Dance On!, The Boys, Foot Tapper, Atlantis, Shindig, It's Been A Blue Day, Geronimo, Theme For Young Lovers and This Hammer...

Incidentally, I wonder what EMI will do about Foot Tapper?

A seldom-mentioned oddity is that on mono pressings of the original UK "More Hits!" LP, the soundtrack version of FT was used, whilst on stereo pressings, the re-recording (single version) was used.

It'd be nice to think that EMI will replicate this, giving us a mono CD version of the "album version" (the 45 version is already available on CD, several times over)...

Food for thought?
Incidentally, the lack of the stereo mix of Trying To Forget The One You Love (a 1968 Shadows vocal B-side, for those who were not aware of the fact) is not a killer - it is already available on two previous Shads CDs: "The First Twenty Years At The Top" and "Everything Of Value". The inclusion of the mono version (another official CD "first") has to be very welcome!
