Shalesbrook Morris Costume

Shalesbrook Morris, 1978 and 2003

Watch the original 1978 line up of dancers turn into their 2003 counterparts by passing your mouse over the picture! We thank the East Grinstead Courier for this 1978 photograph.

1978
The original kit featured a cinnamon empire line pinafore dress with a white apron and white petticoat. A white cheesecloth, long sleeved blouse was worn with shoulder ribbons. Black stockings, sandals and wrist and ankle bells completed the outfit.

1979
A straw hat adorned by ribbons was added to the kit. Brown one bar, button shoes replaced the sandals, and white stockings replaced what had been black.

1986 to 1993
Short-sleeved white blouses replaced the long-sleeved variety.

1994 to 1998
Long-sleeved white blouses complete with Peter Pan collars replaced the short-sleeved blouses. The apron disappeared.

1999 to 2002
Another blouse change. White, long-sleeved, collarless blouses rule the day.
Brown Ecco shoes take over from the singlebar, heeled variety.

2002
Trousers or skirt in rust brown. Skirt has splits revealing a cream petticoat. Cream blouses with collars and three quarter length sleeves are worn with tatter waistcoats, ribbons are attached at the sleeve. Straw hats are still worn, as are bells on shoes and wrists.
