The Art of Writing Critiques
Writing critiques of dog shows is most interesting to both the writer (judge) and the readers (exhibitors). But do the exhibitors know what the judge is really thinking when they are writing those critiques. To help the exhibitors better understand the judge’s written word, the following will be a great help: -
Showing better than in previous class - I reversed my decision
Skilfully presented - A good attempt at hiding its faults
Full of spirit - Damn near had my hand off
Well handled - The exhibitor wouldn’t leave it
aloneHad been hard done by in the past - All previous judges were wrong
Well known winner - I knew it had won before
A new one to top honours - Why wasn’t I told it hadn’t won before
Must be made up - All future judges please follow me
One for the future - Come back in 12 months time
Not quite ready yet - Should have stayed at home
Needs to tighten up - Why don’t they give it some exercise
Has much to offer the breed - There is nothing else like it in the ring
An outstanding puppy - And even if it isn’t I know the owner can make up anything
Always one of my favourite breeds - Why aren’t I asked to judge more often
Enjoyed judging the breed again - It’s time I was asked to do CCs
Sporting breed - Someone who didn’t win bought me a drink
Pleased to see it do well in the group - I told the judge it was a good one
Moved like a train - Had steam coming out of its ears
Moved well going away - But it looked like it was beating eggs coming back
Sporting owners - Can be bumped without fear
A quality entry - I wish there had been a few more
An easy winner - The rest were shocking
These two could change places - I was probably wrong
Strode well out - Was moving too quickly for me to see anything
Not putting all in - It wouldn’t stand up
Has one big ‘if’ - I’m not saying what it is though, everyone knows about it but I don’t want people to think I missed it
Well handled by his young owner - I was watching the handler not the dog
A most popular win - The owners husband clapped
An enthusiastic gallery - The owners husband brought his mother and they both clapped
A packed ringside - The children came too
Promising puppy - I am going to put it up the next time I judge
Unlucky to meet winner - -ditto-
I understand this makes him up - I played safe
This was a difficult class to judge - I didn’t recognise a soul
Typical of this famous kennel - I know they have good ones and I hope this is one of them
An old favourite of mine - I put him up last time I judged
But a worthy champion - Past its best and should be retired
Short of coat - Bald as a coot
Coat not at its best - Needs a good brushing
Well bodied up - Fat as a pig
Impressed me on the table - But looked nothing off it
Not enjoying himself - A quivering wreck
Rather heavy in ear - Ears like a cobblers apron
Spirited - Ferocious
