My parents have been researching their respective family history for several years, and have, in some lines, managed to trace their families back almost to the time of the Norman conquest. This makes the Shaw side of the family look very bare! However, time permitting, I may be able to remedy this - at least partly.

Family History Online

Publishes on-line records compiled by Family History Societies. Search over 66 million records including parish registers, memorial inscriptions, censuses, poor law documents and others. Registration is required, but searching the index is free. Further information requires payment.

Family History Society of Cheshire

A useful resource for finding out about places in Cheshire, including areas which are no longer part of the County. It also offers membership, meetings, etc.

Claims to be the largest provider of professional family history research services in Ireland. Includes County Centres, sources, news, maps, and a page of links.

Last Name Meanings

Find the ethnic origin and meaning of last names. Surname dictionary and genealogy helps include names of Irish, German, English, French, Italian, and Jewish descent. Registration required.

Manchester Archives

Midlands Historical Data

Sales of CDs of digital images of Directories, Local History Books, Church Records and Military Books. Covers the old counties of Shropshire, Staffordshire and Warwickshire. CDs are available for sale but can be searched online.

Public Records Office Family History pages and Family Records Office

A partnership of various government and public sector bodies useful for family history researchers. Lots of information and links on family history research.

Roots UK

Roots UK offers you the ability to search through multiple databases with one click, so you can find and access likely entries quickly. There is the electoral roll for London in 2005; birth, marriage and death index records from 1837-2005; and census transcripts 1841-1891 (excluding 1881).

Rootsweb

The primary purpose and function of RootsWeb.com is to connect people so that they can help each other and share genealogical research. Most resources on RootsWeb.com are designed to facilitate such connections. Contains user contributed transcriptions or records, mailing lists, member tree uploads, message boards, etc.

Scotlands People

The official government source of genealogical data for Scotland - BMD records, old parish registers, census information, wills and testaments.

The Society of Genealogists

Research material, guidance and support for family history researchers. Unfortunately the namesearch facility requires Javascript. Many links to other societies, etc. For some pages, it may be necessary to accept cookies.

Ulster Ancestry

A site for researching Northern Ireland ancestry. Some free information and a page of links.

World GenWeb Project

Including, among others, British Isles, England and Wales. A non-profit volunteer organization that is dedicated to the free use and access of public domain genealogical information. There are links to separate projects fore different countries/regions. Internet websites are used to create "local repositories" of information that researchers worldwide can access. Each project website contains local resource information. There are also query pages, etc. Family trees can also be uploaded and viewed.
