Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865) lived for a time in South Mancheser, and her house is currently being restored. Forget the horrible BBC dramatisations, and read the original works. There is a splendid Elizabeth Gaskell web site located in Japan, with a huge amount of information on Mrs Gaskell and her writings. Very readble books and stories, very readable web site.
