The city of Peterborough began with the founding of a monastery by the Saxons in Ad 655.From around the monastery a settlement grew into the town of Medeshamstede. In AD870 the Danes came up the river Nene and caused great destruction in the area, including the destruction of the Abbey. One hundred years later the Benedictine Monks built a monastery which was dedicated in972.Around the year 1000 Medeshamstede became a Burgh and became St.Petersburgh.Over the next few years the Abbey became so wealthy it became known as Gildenburgh .An accidental fire in 1116 caused the destruction of the Abbey and most of the town. Building of the present Cathedral Church of St.Peter,St.Paul and St.Andrew began in 1118 and took over a hundred years to complete. In 1541 Henry the Eighth declared that the Abbey was to become a Cathedral and the town to become a City, thus the City of Peterborough came into being.
