Sydney Harbour,in New South Wales Australia,is one of the finest natural harbours in the world, and is one of three harbours making up Port Jackson. The other two being North Harbour and Middle Harbour also included in Port Jackson are the deepwater mouths of the Lane Cove and Parramatta Rivers. The harbour was discovered in 1770 by Captain Cook who named it after Sir George Jackson the then admiralty secretary.
The inlet is 12miles(19km.) in length.and the total area of Port Jackson is approx.21sq.miles(54sq.km.)having a shoreline of 150miles(240km.)The greatest depth is 155ft.(47m.)at low water near Blues Point. The 1.5mile(2.2km.)wide entrance lies between the North and South Heads.
Near the entrance Naval bases are located and the mast of H.M.A.S.Sydney can be seen. Many attractive properties are built along the shoreline.
Nearer the city of Sydney can be seen in the harbour the old convict prison of Fort Denison,no longer used for its original purpose. No doubts the sharks in Sydney Harbour was a deterrent to any escape attempts.
