Sydney Harbour bridge

The World famous bridge is the worlds largest steel arch bridge.Designed and built between 1924 and 1932 by Dorman Long & Co.Middlesbrough England, the value of the contract was £A4,217,721.11s.10d.

The deck is 160ft.(49m.)wide and carries a footpath,a cycleway,two train tracks and eight vehicle lanes.It is estimated that in the1980`s the bridge was carrying 35 million passengers a year.To relieve the congestion on the bridge the Sydney Harbour tunnel was opened in September 1992.

Connecting Sydney on the south shore with it`s northern suburbs and having an arch span of 1,650ft.(505m.) making together with it`s approach spans a total of 3735ft.(1149m.) The arch height from sea level is 435ft.(134m.)Total weight of steelworks is 52,800 tonnes including 6,000,000 rivets.The official opening day was 19/03/1932 by N.S.W.Premier J.Lang.however immediately prior to the opening Captain F De Groot entered Australian folk history by slashing the tape with his sword.
