Walter was born around 1150 on Sir Hugh de Wac's manor of Cawthorpe in Lincolnshire. His father, Aedwin, was a villein and held thirty five acres of land from Sir Hugh.  Aedwin was proud of his Saxon heritage especially its connection with the famous resistance fighter Hereward the Wake. Walter is content to accept the changes brought by the Normans and is willing to work with these new overlords.

Walter, like other boys, trained in the skill of archery from a young age. He showed an aptitude that was recognised by Sir Hugh and Walter became a member of Sir Hugh’s retinue when required. Walter picked up the art of the cordwainer on one of his sorties with Sir Hugh. He developed this until it became his main trade. Thus he makes shoes, belts, pouches and other small items from leather.

On his father's death, Walter took his cordwainer skills and a small inheritance and set up in business. By dint of hard work he became burgess (one who has a trade and a small shop/workshop). This obliged him by law to keep a helmet, spear and shield and be called up as a spearman for up to 40 days’ military service a year as part of his feudal obligation.

Walter now lives and works in the small town of Bourne. Sir Hugh has died and his feudal obligations are now due to Sir Hugh’s son, Sir Geffrye. However, Walter's skill with the bow is also appreciated by Sir Geffrye and he often requires Walter to accompany him on his travels.

Walter was married to Katherine, but she died in childbirth with their first child.  The child also died a few days later. He has never re-married.
