Somersham Club Championship

The Club Championship is the traditional end of season meeting. It's a fun event and an opportunity for a few friends and family to have a go, but also a prestigious one as team mates have the opportunity to stake their claim as the club's best rider. Since 2001 the event has used a handicap system to ensure everybody has a chance to win.

2008 Match Report

The 2008 event was in doubt until a free date in November was found, and then persistent rain leading up to the meeting tried its best to cancel proceedings. But although it was a bit soggy going up to the first bend, the track actually rode extremely well and didn't dampen the racing.
With several key riders failing to support the meeting we were pleased to invite some Kesgrave juniors, and I'm sure young Panther Pierce Bacon was glad about that! He finished top dog after an exciting final featuring the top 4 scorers.
Somersham 9 year old Joe Hodge headed the qualifiers, and lined up alongside Bacon in the final. Joining them on the grid was top Somersham rider Gary Brown, but under the handicap system he would have to do an extra lap. Completing the line-up was 2007 champion Steve Copping - starting on the backstraight. The first attempt was sportingly stopped after Hodge bizarrely lost a shoe, but in the rerun Bacon shot from the tapes to take the lead. Hodge pressured right to the finish but could not find a way past. Copping and Brown were left to reflect on how much progress the youngsters have made this season.
Ironically Bacon was the only rider to take a fall in the qualifiers. He ran out of track in heat 6 as all 4 riders approached the finish at the same time. It suggested the handicaps were spot on for this race!

A Final: P Bacon, J Hodge, S Copping, G Brown
B Final: H Swallow, C Hodge, B Copping, R Brown
C Final: D Leggett, M Berry, L Gifkins

Qualification: J Hodge 15, G Brown 14, P Bacon 13, S Copping 12, H Swallow 11, C Hodge 9, B Copping 9, R Brown 9, M Berry 9, L Gifkins 8, D Leggett 7.

2007 Match Report

A few non-starters threatened to spoil the end of season party, but with lovely weather and a friendly atmosphere Somersham finished their season with another successful Club Championship. Again sponsored by GB Contracts and employing the now traditional handicap system, a fair, unpredictable, somewhat complex, but overly enjoyable meeting ensued.
The racing proved competitive as the usual defensive tactics of the experienced men had to be swapped for sheer speed as they attempted to catch the man in front.
As the meeting developed Steve Copping emerged as the man to beat but he suffered his first defeat to Gary Brown in a photo finish heat 12. With Andy Turnbull winning the next race, the pressure was on Steve to win his last one to take the title. However, brotherly love went out the window as Barry Copping passed Steve in another hectic race.
This set up a tense run-off for the Championship. Andy caught Steve after a couple of laps, but in a replica of the heats, he could find no way past. It gave Steve the title - his first club Championship win in 20 attempts I believe.
Andy gained some consolation by winning the special Junior race after passing the impressive Hodge brothers.
Every rider had a good race at some stage, but perhaps the biggest hero was Peter Mittell. Determined not be ruled out through injury, Peter took a pedal off his bike and rode one legged to avoid strain on his bad knee! We will forgive his poor racing line on this occasion!

Scores.: S Copping 22, A Turnbull 22, G Brown 19, D Croft 16, D Hodge 16, J Hodge 13, B Copping 12, M Berry 12, P Mittell 9, R Brown 9.

2006 Match Report

Somersham finished their season with the annual Club Championship, sponsored by GB Contracts. A whole spectrum of competitors were invited (persuaded in some cases) to take part, and the handicap formula ensured everyone stood a chance. A determined Barry Copping was unbeaten in the heats and comfortably qualified for the final. However, brothers Fraser and Morgan Borrett had a substantial headstart in the deciding race, and Copping just failed to catch 9 year old Morgan for the title. Meanwhile Fraser held onto third ahead of fast closing guest Scott McDowell.

Final: M Borrett, B Copping, F Borrett, S McDowell

Qualification: B Copping 20, M Borrett 19, S McDowell 17, F Borrett 16, P Mittell 15, J Brooke 14, Ga Brown 13, R Williamson 12, P Williamson 11, M Garrod 10, J Hodge 10, W Kitcher 10, A Brown 9, S Copping 7, J Copping 7, Gr Brown 5, R Brown 4, R Saunderson-Copping 1.

2005 Match Report

A lovely day, super track conditions, and the biggest line-up ever made this another great Club Championship.
Most club members took part including a couple of dads, and even the sponsors, Graham and Andrew Brown of GB Contracts, got onto the track. Joe Hodge, at 6 the youngest competitor, was able to mix it with his experienced uncle Gary Brown, plus the oldest competitor - his Grandad, thanks to the handicap system employed. Riders were split around the track with up to a lap seperating them. It was a little complex, but ensured every rider stood a chance of getting in the points, and most races saw plenty of bunching on the last bend.
20 qualifying heats decided which finals riders qualified for, and the winner of each final progressed to the next one. Points were tight and it wasn't until the end that the qualifiers were known.
Barry Copping struggled early on, but after several costume changes, found the fastest shirt for the D final. His handicap proved too much in the C final though, despite a great battle with Graham Brown. Meanwhile, in front of them their brothers Steve Copping and Andrew Brown were having a similar tussle. It was Adam Cotterell who run the race though, and he transferred to the B final, albeit too tired to make much impression. Morgan Borrett made the most of his head-start to win that, despite impressive Jack Barnes closing in fast. Onto the big one, and we saw Morgan at the tapes alongside top two Andy Mittell and Gary Brown - but they had an extra lap to do! Joshua Brooke starting from the first bend, initially passed reigning champion Jordan Chester-Flatt and then took the lead. Brown and Mittell were hot on his heels but ran out of laps, while Morgan hung onto fourth to take the top junior award.

Qualifying scores: A Mittell 15, Ga Brown 14, J Brooke 13, R Saunderson-Copping 13, J Chester-Flatt 12, J Barnes 11.5, M Borrett 11, P Mittell 10.5, S Copping 10, Gr Brown 10, A Brown 10, A Cotterell 9, D Knock 9, R Brown 9, B Brooke 8, J Copping 8, B Copping 6, J Hodge 6, F Borrett 5.

C Final: A Cotterell, S Copping, A Brown, B Copping, Gr Brown, D Knock
B Final: M Borrett, J Barnes, P Mittell, A Cotterell
A Final: J Brooke, Ga Brown, A Mittell, M Borrett, J Chester-Flatt, R Saunderson-Copping NS

2004 Match Report

The last home fixture was the fun-filled Club Championship, where there was a surprise winner in Jordan Chester-Flatt. He only started racing in the summer but finished the meeting in style by winning 3 races on the trot!
In the junior group Jordan had several close tussles with Joseph Newton and they tied on points ahead of Michael Garrod so the top 2 qualified for the C final. Jordan, on the front grid won that from Pete Williamson to progress into the B final and another win from the front, this time ahead of Steve Copping. Now in the A final, Jordan was given a 1/4 lap start ahead of Peter Mittell, while Andy Mittell and Gary Brown were a further 1/4 lap behind. The chasing pack gained some ground but ran out of laps, so Jordan won, with Peter finishing 2nd and Andy 3rd.

Junior qualifying scores: J Chester-Flatt 21, J Newton 21, M Garrod 18, Z Whitton 11, T King 8, J Hodge 5.

Seniors: G Brown 14, P Mittell 13, A Mittell 13, S Copping 9, R Williamson 9, R Brown 9, B Copping 7, P Williamson 4

Final: J Chester-Flatt, P Mittell, A Mittell, G Brown.

2003 Match Report

The final 2003 event at Somersham was the traditional Club Championship where Joe Hodge, just 4, had his first taste of racing. He had a lap head start but was very proud of his 9 points! The winner was decided in an eventful last heat. Steve Copping was an early leader but passed by Richard Williamson. Gary Brown then challenged but collided and fell. This left a big gap for Andy Mittell to exploit and he needed no persuading to nip through and win the meeting.

Qualfying scores: P Mittell 15, A Mittell 15, G Brown 15, S Copping 15, D Hodge 15, R Williamson 15, B Copping 13, P Williamson 13, R Brown 12, J Hodge 9, C Hodge 8

Final: A Mittell, R Williamson, P Mittell, S Copping, G Brown, D Hodge.

2002 Match Report

Somersham rounded off their season with an entertaining Handicap Club Championship fun event, which whould perhaps have been called off with less keen riders as gale force winds prevailed throughout. The starting tapes could not be used and riders were unable to keep their balance on the grids, while the younger riders could hardly pedal down the home straight.
The unique handicap format ensured plenty of overtaking and close finishes as riders battled for a place in the semis and then the final. Steve Copping took heat 1 after Richard Williamson and Luke Hodgkinson both fell on a slippery section, which also claimed Simon Turnbull in his first outing. Gary Brown took the next heat from the back, as he and Andy Mittell appeared to cope best with the conditions and they led the qualifiers for the semi-finals.
In the first, Pete Williamson looked on course for the final but with a lap to go he was literally blown off it as he careered onto the centre green. While the second semi saw holder Andy Turnbull's hopes blown away when the head wind proved too much for the youngster.
The 6 rider final could have been anyone's race, but a safe ride off the front of the grid was enough for Luke Hodgkinson to complete his first season in the sport with a winning trophy. The others were right behind him though with Barry Copping holding onto 2nd and Gary Brown making up ground to snatch 3rd on the line.

Qualfying scores: A Mittell 20, G Brown 18, L Hodgkinson 16, B Copping 16, R Williamson 15, S Copping 13, A Turnbull 13, R Vest 11, P Williamson 10, D Hodge 10, P Mittell 8, S Turnbull 7, R Brown 5

Final: L Hodgkinson, B Copping, G Brown, A Mittell, S Copping, R Williamson.

2001 Match Report

Somersham Cycle Speedway completed a wonderful season with the traditional Club Championship, held in glorious sunshine. Officially a fun event for members and a chance for friends and relatives to try the sport, but in practice a meeting everyone wants to win judging by the hard fought racing.
With a large range of abilities, a handicap system was employed so that everyone had a chance. Youngest members Elliott Crowe and Daniel Hodge had a lap head start over the club's top riders with other riders starting somewhere in between.
The gradings seemed about right with predicting a winner difficult and many races being decided on the final bend. However 8 year old Andy Turnbull, in splendid form on a new bike, soon emerged as the rider to beat. Also impressing early on was Barry Copping, but he blew his chances later, careering off the track while comfortably leading. Peter Williamson was also on course for a place in the final but was pipped by son Richard to the line in the last heat.
With the qualification heats over Turnbull lined up in the final against father and son duo Peter and Andy Mittell, and the experienced Gary Brown. Andy Mittell chased hard to make up his half lap handicap but Turnbull made no mistake and deservedly reached the chequered flag first. Brown snatched third when Peter Mittell fell under pressure.

Scores:
A Turnbull 20, A Mittell 18, G Brown 17, P Mittell 16, P Williamson 15, R Williamson 14, B Copping 14, S Turnbull 13, S Copping 11, D Hodge 11, I Turnbull 9, M Savage 8, M Dickerson 8, R Brown 6, D Mittell 6, E Crowe 5, C Crowe 4, C Hodge 1.
