Somersham v Hethersett
05/5/2002 SE1/NSL

With Somersham Stars' Richard Williamson having sustained a broken wrist in a racing crash at Hawbush the squad's top end has become rather vunerable. Indeed, it was a lack of race winners which proved the issue when Hethersett visited and left with the 2 league points.
The competiveness of the meeting was indicated in the first race when a clash between Simon Turnbull and Nick Myhill saw the latter career straight off the circuit and into the undergrowth of the playing field boundary.
There was little between the teams in the early heats, but Somersham seemed to lose their way mid-match. Pete Williamson lost a chain, and with Steve Copping taking a heavy tumble on the fast circuit Hethersett had suddenly built up a 12 point lead. Led by the effective Dave Alexander and Leigh Cossey, the visitors rode well and protected their advantage to the end.
For Somersham, Peter Mittell was gating well and Luke Hodgkinson showed promise in his home debut, but the harder the home side tried the more on-track mistakes crept in.
The Stars now have a series of away fixtures but are staging a junior pairs event on May 14 at 19:00 .
