Spiers & Hartwell Ltd. is a privately owned and operated company founded in 1954 by Deryck Hartwell.
We are wholly committed to the handling, storage and distribution of fresh produce both locally produced and imported. The company has steadily expanded and positioned itself as one of the leaders within the industry. We have a client base of over two hundred customers who use our services on a regular basis. Each customer is afforded the same high level of service that Spiers & Hartwell has become well known for. From running one vehicle in 1954 the company now operates a modern fleet of more than 40 vehicles. All our vehicles are regularly maintained by our trained mechanics in our own workshops at our Blackminster Depot. The majority of deliveries are made on our own vehicles by our own full time drivers who are fully experienced in the handling of fresh produce.
In the main, produce is delivered on refrigerated vehicles with 90 % of all market deliveries being made on cool chain trailers. These are mainly in the form of rigid box trailers but do include some insuliners. Deliveries are made to every major wholesale market throughout the country, five nights a week, Sunday to Thursday inclusive. A Friday night service is available with deliveries to the majority of markets excluding Scotland.
Supermarket deliveries are also catered for with an extensive delivery service to the majority of Multiple R.D.C.s throughout the country. These deliveries are made six days a week from Sunday to Friday inclusive, with a limited service available on Saturdays. Our service to Scotland is second to none. It is complimented by the fact that we have a permanently manned depot situated within Glasgow Fruit Market.
When unloaded at our depot, produce can either be stored at ambient temperature or in coldstores. The complex is divided into several independently controlled chambers of varying capacity. Each pallet held within a store is accessible with minimal pallet movement.
We have a full time quality control team based at our Blackminster Depot, who check the produce on arrival and during its time in our stores. They are at your disposal to inspect and report on your produce upon request. Our office is manned from 08.00hrs until 18.00hrs Monday to Friday, and from 08.00hrs until 13.00hrs Saturday and Sunday. Vehicle arrivals should be advised at least 24 hours before arrival at our depot which will enable us to prepare for the unloading and storage of the produce.
