Wigginton

Wigginton in Hertfordshire is one of four villages of this name in the United Kingdom. The others are in Yorkshire, Staffordshire, & Oxfordshire. This village is approximately 30 miles north west of London.

To find the village, take the A41 northbound from Junction 20 of the M25 & come off at the fourth exit that will be sign-posted to Wigginton & Tring & Northchurch, then just follow the signs.

Situated 2 miles from Tring it comes under the borough of Dacorum, and the local authority is centred in Hemel Hempstead. The estate agents information (if it can be believed) says that the village is the highest in the Chilterns, with parts of the village over 210 metres above sea level. Speaking from experience, I have crossed what appears to be a snow line on occasions in the winter.

Wigginton is a relatively small community which in Victorian days was known for straw plaiting. At the end of the nineteenth & beginning of the twentieth centuries a lot of land in the area still formed part of the Rothschild estate. The presence in the area of Muntjack deer & Glis-Glis ( edible door-mouse) can be traced back to the house of Rothschild. Now the village is mainly a commuter village with a large percentage of the occupants travelling some distance to work. Even so, it possesses a good community spirit, with a number of groups that help to maintain activities in village, and according to the local estate agents is very much a "highly desirable location".

One of the most notable local businesses is "Champneys" the world-renowned health resort (http://www.champneys.com) which is located on the edge of the village. Sadly, the village shop was forced to close on the retirement of the owners when no new shopkeeper could be located, but as a result the public transport has been improved, slightly. The village, which in olden days could boast of many public houses, has just one remaining now, The Greyhound on Chesham Road, & this, together with the School, Village Hall & Churches, form the focus of much of village social life.

Wigginton Parish Council.

News from the Parish Council. The Sports Field completed a change in ownership in 2001, from The Wigginton Poors Charity to the Parish Council, thereby safe-guarding the field for the use & benefit of the Village.

A new challenge facing the PC in 2004/5 is what to do with the building often referred by some as the Scout Hut. This was a second-hand building that was acquired & erected in the late 1970s at a time when the village hall was not in a very good state. Over the years however, the timber framed & timber clad building has suffered from vandalism & a lack of maintenance. Temporary planning permission was in place but the planning authority would only grant this until June 2004. A permanent solution involving either removal, renovation or replacement needs to be in place soon. A temporary reprieve has been granted until April 2005. A surveyor drew up plans with outline costings that total £70,000. The prospect of this sum applied to the Council tax almost certainly put people off of recommending that the council do the work. However, a new committee of dedicated individuals has been set up with the express purpose of identifying grants, raising funds & identifying uses & users of a refurbished/rebuilt building. It does not seem to make sense to have a sports field with no facilities such as toilets or changing rooms. The new Committee can be contacted at wigginton.pavilion@virgin.net. If you can help with ideas that would increase usage of this building please do not hesitate to contact the committee. The more users we can identify the better the business plan that can be put forward.

A motion to submit the plans for consideration was passed at the Parish Council meeting in April 2005.

The annual Parish meeting is in May.

Village Events

Village Show - June 25th 2005
The Gardeners Association which was founded (perhaps re-founded might be an appropriate term) in 1977 used to hold an Annual Horticultural Show, combined with a Fete, on the first Saturday in September. Sadly as time passed the size of the committee dwindled & they could no longer put on such an event. As soon as this happened, a separate committee formed with the sole aim of maintaining the village tradition. The date was set as the first Saturday in July in order to ensure the support of the local school. At the 1999 Show, it was felt that attendance was down on what could be achieved due to clashes with a number of other local events. So the date for the Show in 2000 was set as the last Saturday in June. This allowed us to hold a much larger classic car contest on the same day as it no longer clashed with another major event at Prestwood in Buckinghamshire. We decided to keep this and set the date for all years since to be the last Saturday in June.

In 2000 the Show was opened by Lord Thurso, the then General Manager of Champneys. For 2001 the Show was even bigger, with more high quality craft stalls, stalls & classic cars & professional entertainment. Lord Thurso resigned from Champneys when he was elected to represent his constituency (Caithness & Sutherland) in the House of Commons. This made him the first hereditary peer of the realm to take his seat in the Commons, due to the changes in the rules concerning membership of the House of Lords. We wish him well.
In 2001 the Worshipful Mayor of the Borough of Dacorum & the Mayoress (Councillor Derek & Mrs Janet Townsend) opened the Show for us.
For 2002 the Show was superbly supported by BBC Three Counties Radio who sent a mobile radio unit with Roberto Perrone & Ernie Almond to open & compere the Show for us. The feature entertainment was "The Mighty Smith", three times Britain's strongest man.
The 2003 Show had the benefit of wonderful weather which helped make for an excellent day. With arena events including the Tring Shotokan Club and Aylesbury Canine Training Society, 150+ classic cars, numerous stalls in the marquee & the field it was a packed afternoon with over 12 local charities & organisations using it to raise funds for the good causes.
The Show in 2004 was on Saturday June 26th. By the beginning of March we already had 50 classic cars booked in and ended up with more than 130 cars & bikes. The Show was opened by Perry Fenwick, who plays Billy Mitchell in Eastenders who brought his wife Angela Lonsdale who acted in Coronation Street for 3 years. Our thanks to Stephen Purdew of Champneys for arranging this. One of the featured entertainers this year was "Its Him" Nigel Roder who featured at one of earliest Shows with a friend under the maoe of "Him & Me". Nigel can be booked via his web site. We also had a return from Tring Shotokan club and a wonderful display of geese herding in the arena (I will try to get a weblink for this team and post that to the site).
The Show in 2005 is on June 25th.

It has just been confirmed that former WBC Heavyweight Champion of the World, Frank Bruno MBE will be openingh the Show on Saturday at 12 noon.

Our headline arena act will feature a display team featuring a falconry display & gundogs & ferrets from Impact Falconry of Aldenham.
For the past few years we have held a Barn Dance in the Marquee on the evening of the Show. In the past we have booked The Flying Toads, from Horsham. For 2002, 2003 & 2004 we booked Time of Your Life. With Barry Goodman being away on vacation we were unable to book them for 2005 but have a new band with a very high reputation for a "good dance" "The Coproliters". Tickets are on sale through the usual outlets now.

We were very fortunate in 2004 with sponsorship. The key sponsors were Champneys, A.G Evans Ltd and A.W.Burch Kitchens. We thank these & our other sponsors for their support as they have continued to provide excellent sponsorship in 2005 for which the Committee are very grateful..

Fireworks - October 29th 2005
The display this year is likely to be on October 29th, a week before November 5th. The firework display companies were so fully booked as it is the first time for some time that the 5th falls on a Saturday and so we will take the opportunity to make more of Hallowe'en.
Background to the Fireworks: As well as the Show in the Summer, the Show Committee raise funds to hold a firework display on a Saturday close to November 5th. The emphasis is always on safety with all fireworks being set off using the latest in electronic detonators and wide safety margins from the bonfire & display. Those responsible have been trained & are certified by one of the major UK display fireworks manufacturers - "Fantastic Fireworks" the suppliers of our fireworks.
As we do not charge, the display always loses money, in order to keep the display going we need people to donate freely into the collection buckets on the night. Local displays charge as much at £7 per head - if everyone donated just half that we would have more than enough for the display.
WI Bazaar - November.
The village Women's Institute is well supported & meets every month with a variety of interesting speakers. One of their main fund-raising events is a bazaar in the run-up to Christmas where a wide range of home produce & crafts are sold. Apart from this the event is a good social occasion with a lot of people sitting down to for a snack & having a chat.

Gardeners Events
The local Gardeners Association now stages two shows a year. One in Spring, held on a Sunday with cream teas in the afternoon, the other the annual flower & produce show on the first Saturday in September. In the autumn & winter meetings are held monthly with guest speakers, many taken from the RHS Speakers book. The Social evening in December is a light-hearted occasion & is used to raise money to donate to the "Children In Need" charity which holds it evening on BBC TV about 2 weeks beforehand.

Scouts, Cubs & Guides
The village, until recently, was "twinned" with another local village, Aldbury, to provide a scout troop of a suitable size (the 1st Aldbury &Wigginton Scout Group). This has now merged with scouts from Cholesbury & the New Mill area of Tring to form the "Ridgeway Scout Group" with headquarters in Tring (New Mill) and Wigginton. The group now has a web site up & running so just click on the link to get details of meetings etc. The web address is www.ridgeway-scouts.org.

St Bartholomew's Church
The church is a wonderful old building with a lot of character. With a good congregation, the services are well attended. The church in Wigginton lost its vicar a few years ago when Rev Rob Varty had to retire through ill-health. It was a matter of great regret for all of the villagers, church-goers & non-church-goers alike, that Rob had to retire and so leave the village. We all wish him & Caty the very best for the future.
The Parochial Church Council have now got a replacement Vicar allocated to the Parish, at least part time. .
When walking around the cemetery, perhaps not everyone's cup of tea, and appreciating the tranquillity, take a look at some of the gravestones. One grave to look out for, is the one marking the grave of James Osborne who used to live in the village and who served with the Northamptonshire Regiment in the Boer War. James Osborne was awarded the Victoria Cross. The Victoria Cross citation can be found at http://www.chapter-one.com/vc/award.asp?vc=951

Wigginton Baptist Chapel
As well as the Church, the village is fortunate to also have an active Baptist chapel. The minister, John Young, together with St Bartholmews Church, hold a unified Church service in the marquee on the Sunday following the Village Show. This is a wonderful occasion which attracts a congregation of well over 100 people.

It consists of a large hall, capacity 80, and a small hall, capacity 50. There is a kitchen, a stage and piano in the large hall and disabled access and toilet.

Wigginton F.C. A football team has existed in the village on & off for the past 40 years & has always played on the Chesham Road pitch.

The latest incarnation of the team was started by local resident Toby Stuart-Jervis in 1990. The nineties saw a fair amount of success for the club, starting from the bottom division of the Berkhamsted Sunday Football League (B.S.F.L.) and rising to the heady heights of the second division. Several notable cup runs were recoded in the mid-nineties.

The teams most successful period came in the 2001/2 & 2002/3 seasons seeing the squad promoted from Division 3 to Division 1 in successive years.

With the help & generous sponsorship over the last 10 years of local businessman Ron Peterson from R&J Landscapes (London) Ltd, the team has now consolidated it's position as a well established club in division 1 of the B.S.F.L.

The team has always been well represented by both Wigginton & Tring based players & the future looks very healthy with the current squad boasting a number of excellent young players. Interest in the club has risen to the point where a reserve team is being considered for the 2005/6 season. They are managed by Rob Casey who can be contacted on 07793 236 038.

The current fixture list for the team is as follows:

Hardings Wood. Hardings wood is a 5.8 hectare wood on the outskirts of the village of Wigginton in Hertfordshire, England.
The Hardings Wood Trust was set up by a group of local residents in early 2003 with the aim of securing the wood as a local amenity and maintaining access to walk the footpaths for the people of Wigginton and the surrounding areas. In April 2003, thanks to a grant from the
Heritage Lottery fund the Trust was able to purchase the wood. More information can be found at http://www.hardingswood.org.uk/.

Wigginton Businesses.

Champneys Health Resort. Lord Thurso, the general manager of Champneys, kindly agreed to open the Village Show in June 2000. He resigned his post after the 2001 general election when he was elected as the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Caithness & Sutherland & wanted to devote his time to his constituents. Champneys was bought by the Purdew Health Farms Group (who owned Henlow Grange and other health resorts) and in 2003 the group rebranded to be known as "Champneys Health Resorts". Stephen Purdew and his General manager, Grant Noble, have been very supportive of the Village Show for which we offer our thanks.

A major transformation is currently taking place at Champneys Tring.

The £12.5m development is divided into two stages and includes:

• A new 25 metre pool. Heated and Ozone treated
