Chapel of Ease circa 1768 AD

This picture shows the front entrance to The Chapel of Ease which Dr William Barnard had built in place of the old Church repaired for use by Sir Henry Docwra in 1600.  The Bishop's wife Anne, herself the sister of the previous Bishop later Archbishop Stone, endowed the building and her family retained the right to appoint the Chaplain.  This remained the case until 1945.

The building was deemed to be unsafe and was taken down in 1871.

St Augustine's Church 2000AD

The present St Augustine's Church (a member of the Church of Ireland and of the Anglican communion) was built on the site of the Chapel of Ease and dedicated on 11th June 1872.
The simple Gothic style church was designed by the then diocesan architect John Guy Ferguson (1829-1901) a local man who was also responsible for the design of many fine buildings in the city.
The building except for a few minor necessary alterations remains unchanged.
