Rev Thomas Lucas Scott , B.D. who became incumbent of St Augustine's on the 31 December, 1870 and through whose energy and foresight the new church was built. He was a devoted pastor and benefactor for seven years when he then became Rector of Lower Moville.

In 1883 he became Rector of St George's, Dublin until his death in 1908. He was also a Canon of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. A little one light window in the North side of the Chancel was the gift of the late Rev. Thomas L. Scott and represents St. Simeon receiving Christ in the Temple.

THE new Church of St Augustine, or Chapel-of-Ease, the foundation stone of which was laid on the 9th September, 1871 was opened for divine worship on Tuesday 11 June, 1872 by the Lord Bishop of Derry & Raphoe, Dr William Alexander.

The new church is in the 13th Century Gothic style, with a fine chancel arch. The architect was Mr John Guy Ferguson and the builders were George and R. Ferguson.

The Chancel erected by the Scott family is in memory of Thomas L. Scott, D.L. of Willsborough near Eglinton, born 1783, died 1872. The Chancel was paved and the window erected by his children. The total cost of the church and furniture, including a very fine organ by Forster & Andrews was about £1,600.

St Augustine's was the first church in Ireland to be built by voluntary subscription since the Irish Church was disestablished and disendowed. The church has no parish as the cathedral is the parish church. Since 1870 the congregation has been completely independent and is composed of accustomed members who come from all parts of the City and district.

The present church stands as a lasting memorial to the Rev. Thomas Lucas Scott B.D.
