The Rev. William T. Macourt, M.A. was ordained for the curacy of Stranorlar in 1916 and became Rector of St Augustine's Church in 1918. During his ministry the congregation continued to increase until the church was filled to its utmost capacity, the evening congregation reaching an average of 260. The choir was moved into the Chancel to give extra accommodation. The minimum stipend of £400 per annum and a free house for the Rector was raised, so that the church could continue as an independent congregation. William Macourt became Rector of Castlederg in 1924 and became a Canon of St Columb's Cathedral. He died in 1954. |
