Herbert Austin McKegney was ordained in Belfast Cathedral on 28 June, 1927 for the Assistant Curacy of St Patrick's, Coleraine and instituted Rector of St Augustine's Church on the 1 January, 1931. Many major improvements to the church property occurred during his forty one years ministering in St Augustine's. A new church hall was erected, the organ was rebuilt and a new Rectory was built in Bishop Street in 1959. A new kitchen and a new heating and lighting system were installed in the church and halls. Spiritual results are also worthy of mention. From his flock have come, five missionaries, a full-time lay worker and ten clergy. He was appointed a Canon of St Columb's Cathedral in 1948. Canon McKegney had a life-long interest in Scouting. He received the Silver Wolf in 1972, the highest honour of Scouting. In October; 1972 Canon McKegney retired from active ministry after more than four decades of tireless and devoted service to God and his parishioners in St Augustine's Church. He continued in part-time minstry in Coleraine for several years and died in 1987 in his 90th year. A memorial service was held in St.Augustine's on 1st November; 1987. A memorial window was also dedicated to his memory by a grateful congregation in June 1989. To assist Canon McKegney in his ministry a number of Curates were appointed during his ministry.
