A complete ring from the Gloucester foundry, the tenor being recast. The treble and third bear the border Fig. 9, 14, and the second, fourth, and fifth have the ornament Fig. 9, 8, used as a border. The bells, all of which have canons, hang in a composite wood and metal frame, the trusses being of metal in the form of an A, the bearings resting on the horizontal bar. This frame was supplied by Messrs. Taylors of Loughborough in 1885, and this firm rehung the bells with new gudgeons and ball bearings in 1931. The priest’s bell was cast by Messrs. Walker of Chester, who cast a bell for Llanrwst (Denb.) in 1822 but this bell at Mold is probably of more recent date.

New Bells for Mold

On Thursday September 15th, Mold Bellringers enjoyed a day trip to Asten near Eindhoven in Holland to witness the casting of two new bells for the planned augmentation of the bells at Mold Parish Church. The day started with an early flight from Liverpool to Amsterdam and a drive down to the Royal Eijsbouts Foundry in Asten. The ringers were taken on a tour of the foundry where carillons and clocks are made and repaired and new bells are cast for customers from all over the world.

They witnessed an exact replica of the Liberty Bell of Philadelphia being prepared for casting and were able to see and hear some of the recently cast bells which were being tuned and polished before delivery.

When the molten metal was ready in the furnace, it was poured out into a huge ladle where the temperature was measured at over 1000ºC. The ringers each in turn, dropped a Victorian silver 3d bit into the bubbling cauldron. This is an old British symbolic tradition to sweeten the sound of the bells. Once this was done, the Vicar, Ian Day pronounced a blessing over the metal before the ladle was raised to fill the two moulds which would take 2 days to cool off before the mould is broken up leaving the bell ready for finishing, tuning and shipment to Britain.

The existing six bells will shortly be removed from the tower and after being tuned will return along with the new bells cast in Holland, towards the end of November.  It is hoped that they will be on display in the churchyard on Sunday 20th November

The tower at Mold will be silent from 1st October until the new ring of 8 bells is completed in December.

PRESS RELEASE

AUGMENTATION AND RESTORATION OF THE BELLS OF THE CHURCH OF ST MARY THE VIRGIN. MOLD

A faculty has been granted for the augmentation and restoration of the bells at St Mary's Parish Church from 6 to 8 bells. The new tenor bell will be called "The Ringers' Bell / Cloch y Clochganwyr" and will weigh 10cwt 2qtrs and 14lbs [540 kg] The new treble will be called Melangell and will weigh 3cwt 2qtrs and 24lbs [189kg]

The present ring of 6 bells at Mold (Tenor 8cwt [406.5kg]) were cast in 1732 for the smaller structure which then stood on the site and the new heavier ring of bells will be much more acoustically suitable for the fine 18th century tower which was built in 1773.

Eayre and Smith Ltd, Bellhangers of Melbourne Derbyshire, have been engaged to undertake the work and the new bells will be cast by The Royal Eijsbouts Foundry at Asten in The Netherlands.

The frame fixtures and fittings will be substantially overhauled strengthened and repaired during the augmentation. The retuned and augmented bells will have a deeper, richer sound when they are rehung in the tower. They will be easier to ring for learners and experienced ringers alike, helping them to maintain the high standard of ringing which they have achieved.

The cost of the work will be in the region of £35,000 Further information will be made available on the Moldbells website:
