What was it like growing up?: Great. My childhood was not unlike most others. I came from an upper middle class family, single parent (mom), local private schools. You recently had a supporting acting role in a play in Chicago called "Anatomy of Revenge". Please tell us how this play came about for you?: I was a theatre History major and have always been actively involved in acting. By the time I was 20 I had toured with two musicals and done over 36 plays. So it was nothing new. However after a long break I decided to return to the theatre. I sent a bio, picture and resume to the Bailiwick Theatre Company and within in days I was auditioning and eventually cast.
Did you enjoy doing the play and have you got any other acting roles coming up in the future?: I always enjoy being on the stage. It was a wonderful feeling to be back doing what I love Acting. In the near future I am joining the cast of the long running musical "Naked Boys Singing". I am also a member of the Chicago Gay Men's Chorus. I am always ready to perform.
Do you think it's possible for a porn star, a gay porn star in particular to become a Hollywood film star in the conventional sense, do you think we will get to see you on the big screen?: I think I have more opportunities on the small screen than the big screen. I think with all that is happening on cable television, Bravo, Showtime, Logo TV and reality shows there is a great opportunity for Adult stars to start going mainstream. I think that the big screen is still off limits, but ask me again in ten years; there have been tremendous changes in just the last five.
Is it true that to date you hold the adult industry's record for having won the most awards in a porn stars debut year?: Yes. I won ten awards my first year in the business breaking the record held by Kurt Young seven years prior. A total honour, I feel blessed.
Is it true you have even made the Howard Stern Show, if so how did you swing that?: I have an amazing publicist!
How did you manage to get on the "E!" (Entertainment Television) show and what was it about?: I guess my interview with Howard went well enough that they aired it. They did cut out about twenty minutes of my conversation with Howard, but still it was very cool.
Since becoming an international gay porn star have you had any fans coming up to you?: It has lessened some since moving from LA to Chicago. But I do have people coming up to me, especially since the Howard Stern appearance. The bizarre thing is that now straight people come up to me and say "Hey…your that power Bottom" - That's strange.
Have your friends and family noticed your porn work and if so what do they think about it?: Of course all my friends know. They have all had to learn when and where to switch to my porn identity. They of course also know me under my legal name, I am proud of what I do and of what I have accomplished, so there are few people around me who do not know about Bret. My Family is very supportive of what I do. I had accomplished so much at college and started a career at a young age, so they have no reason to feel that I am doing something out of the ordinary. They respect the decisions I make. I have a great family.
