Although I watched and liked Popstars when I heard about a second show, which is going to flood us with similar shows just like the DIY shows have done over recent years, I was not really looking forward to this one. I was not looking forward to it for two reasons, the first because the music business is going to create more programs like this and milk it all to death, whilst sticking to their very narrow line of slim good looking people. The second being all the over hyped talent and lack of talent. We have so much music and soap opera type shows on the television these days and not as much of everything else.
The music business can only support a limited amount of acts at any one time; this is partly due to the charts and also how much the public spend on such a pass time. This means that out of all the people with good voices and even good looks only a small percentage will ever get to be music stars. The rest if they stick at it will only ever get to play at club level. Shows like Pop Idol are a dream ticket for the record companies who spend a fortune on act and band spotters who scout around the country and listen to hundreds of posted demo tapes.
Just like any TV show it has to give us entertainment value, which I think in some cases on this show has over stepped the mark in respect of being pretty cruel to some of it's contestants. This is why we had a panel of so called judges to help give us the entertainment value and I must say their lack of respect for the music-buying nation is pretty arrogant to say the least. People like Mr Cowell & Mr Waterman seem to put themselves on song writing pedestals giving themselves more credit than they deserve. Just as there are too many singers for the music industry to cope with there are too many songwriters too and most of them who don't get right to the top get treated pretty crap in royalties and respect.
I think Simon Cowell to press has been way too cruel in his opinions of who has talent and who has not even more so than Peter Waterman. All the judges before they took on the role of scouting for potential pop idols knew it would involve long days of listening to a high level of people who can't sing but think they can. Knowing this their rudeness and arrogance to me from so-called industry professionals was out of order.
The only good thing to come out of a show like this putting the music industry's licence to make money to one side for a minute, is that somebody is going to end up well off for the rest of their life if they play their cards right and will become famous to boot.
From a music point of view the most annoying of what the judges were searching for was that they didn't want any one who sounded like the current crop of pop stars out there, this is quite laughable and again arrogant and for two reasons. The first being that most of the contestants don't have access to songwriters only other stars CD's and second the judges wanted the contestants to sing a current popular song a verse and a chorus to be exact.
As this show went on it was clear that the judges were so rude and nasty to some people, the really awful contestants were spared the humiliation of the judges tungs lashing their rudeness across the nation thanks to the editors, leaving them with at least some dignity and us with a few good giggles.
One young man I became amazed by was of course Gareth Gates a very sweet looking attractive 17 year old with a stutter. As soon as I saw him being interviewed by Ant & Dec I only then needed to hear him sing and I knew I'd be won over. When I did hear him sing I was surprised by the quality of his voice and became hooked on his whole personality. Gareth was in the first 10 out of 50 left in the first of five television shows last night, enabling us the public to vote 2 out of each show to go through to the final. Papers during the week predicted easily that Gareth would be a hot favourite with the general public. Gareth won well over sixty per cent of the vote pulling in three quarter of a million votes and that's just within the 2 hour window for voting and three of those telephone votes were mine I'm glad but embarrassed to admit (well I am gay, and he is mega handsome, he is totty to die for).
I really do hope Gareth ends up winning and going on to be a pop idol, even if he gets out voted in the final show, I'm sure he would get offered a contract from a leading record company not involved with the show.
Good on you Gareth, may the whole gay community fantasise about every inch of your good looks, you are indeed a pop idol and a good bit of sexy beast gay hot totty to boot! LOL.
Oh below is Gareth's picture, god he's such a cute babe! LOL..
