Terrorism is one of those words that has different meanings to different people to me "Terrorism" means to cause harm to other people in a violent harmful way, another words a terrorist is just another word for the word "bully".
I'm sure just about everybody in the world with access to media knows about the events of 11th September in America. Of course these events were terrible and completely beyond humanity, they were utterly barbaric.
I can remember saying to a number of people before this new century started that the real problem the real evil of this new century would be terrorism, urban terrorism as I remember defining it. The hallmarks of this urban terrorism raised its ugly head in a number of major ways in the last decade of the twentieth century. Such events as shootings in schools, the Oklahoma bombing, the releasing of lethal chemicals in Japan, in the underground and the shootings here in the UK in Hunger ford demonstrates my point. Of course here in the UK we've had terrorist bombings for a number of decades thanks to the IRA and now the Real IRA.
We are all used to hearing on the news of some terrorist organisation somewhere around the world bombing a place or persons or people whether it be here in the UK or in places like Spain and Israel for example. I think we have got so used to hearing of these events that we have all become complacent about it, another words I think we have excepted it as part of our daily life.
The causes of terrorism in many respects are pretty complicated and very usually can quite easily date back to at least a few hundred years ago, if not a great deal further than that. The Irish problem as I call it dates back to at least a few hundred years ago when we in the UK decided we wanted to conquer the world. Make no mistake terrorism it's self is by no means a new thing, it's not something invented in the twentieth century and just carried on into the 21st century, terrorism goes back to the beginning of man. Terrorism isn't just about planting a bomb and blowing up things and people it's about what I have described it as being in my first paragraph.
Terrorists have many causes and reasons for what they do, some of them have single issues like say the IRA wanting a united Ireland others have multiple issues within a bigger picture like Bin Laden. All these organisations I've mentioned have political or religious undertones to their issues and causes and some of them have been created through past wars. Most if not all these types of terrorist organisations will not rest their terror until they achieve the goal or goals they seek. Eventually if we are lucky the more moderate terrorists if you can call them that end up around the negotiating table, as most sensible people around the world will not give into such terrible acts no matter how many places and people are terrorised, others of course will just terrorise forever and a day.
The more moderate wing of the IRA have learned that they will never get a united Ireland by bombing their way to it, they are currently trying to come to arrangements with all the other bodies in Northern Ireland in the "Good Friday Peace Agreement", but the less moderate faction called "The Real IRA" have decided that a united Ireland is what they going to have come what may and have bombed targets both on the main land here and in parts of Northern Ireland.
A mixture of politics, religion and business are the main reasons for the seeds of terrorism to be sewn through out the ages and throughout the ages the methods of terrorism have got more sophisticated with technology. They will of course continue to get more sophisticated as technology moves on today's knifes, guns, bombs and planes will turn into tomorrows nuclear bombs, lasers and maybe even space craft, plus technologies that don't even have names or are not even thought of yet.
There was nothing sophisticated about the attack on America, it was well organised definitely, and was some years in the planning of too. A plane in the right hands is a method of transportation from A to B, of course in the wrong hands as we all have discovered, it's a missile a very deadly one at that. So many products and devices normally used by every day people can be turned into weapons, even fertiliser with the right kind of ordinary day to day products can be turned into a bomb of some kind
The only true way to tackle most terrorists in my eyes is to kill them, assassinate them, and remove them forever. They don't deserve to live or deserve the rights of a lawyer or all the rest of the rights the rest of us deserve. These people are in most cases zygotic or plain evil.
The more worrying trend of terrorism a newer form other than that of the attack on America is that of the individual that gets something like a gun and goes mad with it in the street, the urban terrorist. The person or persons probably a neighbour, someone you've known for years and they have simple snapped inside and gone bonkers. This seems to be happening more and more and every time it seems to be connected with a reason going back to the person or persons feeling they are either not listened to or are misunderstood. It can be something as simple as an on going row with the council or their partner that drives them to such extreme actions. This kind of terrorism seems to come from the desperation and stress of the society those people live in, of course that society they live in we live in too. People in general in the west at any rate really do seem to be getting more stressed and angry especially with their governments, all claiming at some points in their lives that they are not being listened to or talked with but talked to. This trend seems to be getting worse and is not improving which seems to drive people into snapping and lashing out at others around them. I'll give you some potty reasons why people feel they are not being listened to. The European Union bureaucrats came up with the idea of a single currency and have basically forced it on the whole of Europe either through the front door or the back door, they even a few weeks ago stated how much jam their should be in our "Jamie Dodger" biscuits. Now with things like this going on in the name of democracy and these are just two issues amongst thousands across western society no wonder people are feeling that their politicians and public office personnel are out of touch with the people they are supposed to represent.
Tony Blair has mentioned on TV that we as a democracy will not give into terrorists; he uses the word democracy as if we are the meaning of the word. Once we may very well have been a democracy, but today we are just the word with a different meaning. Mr Blair continues to sign our democracy away with the stroke of a pen with the rest of the European Union, so when something happens more and more our politicians who we elect can not make changes to make things right, it's hardly surprising the ordinary person in the street more and more feels frustrated and angry at a system that dictates more and more and listens and talks less and less. Europe used to be a democracy now it's a collective free masons organisation which pushes policies and systems onto the whole of it's population at the stroke of a pen, it's basically a modern form of watered down dictatorship. Maybe Europe will come up with a new word to describe the way they govern their people because it is not democracy. America may very well have it's problems and you may at times need buckets full of money to make a real difference, but they have a much more firmer base of basic democratic principles laid down in a bill of rights which at least protects their basic democratic rights. Here in the UK we have nothing like this we have ancient laws that connect the "House of Lords" and the "House of Commons" together and they both dictate to the rest of the country, with people sitting in them either elected or simple put their by each other. You won't see America signing away their country to an organisation like the EU it would be breaking their constitution.
Terrorism in all shapes and forms will continue to take on new masks; we are at war with this word for good, until mankind basically is no more. The only thing that will keep on changing is the magnitude of the terrible acts that the terrorist or terrorists perform. We might be able to cut down the terror attacks by beefing up security in one shape or another but we will never stop it dead forever. It may take another one hundred years for a terrorist or terrorist organisation to attack with even greater destruction to that which was carried out in America on September 11th 2001, but one day another organisation will succeed. There is only one way of dealing with people that will kill others in this way and that is to simple eliminate them, if they are dead they can't do it again.
One more thing I would like to mention is that a lot of the funding for the IRA came from Americans within America. Americans have indirectly or directly funded the bombing campaigns, which the IRA and Real IRA have carried out. Will Americans stop giving their dollars for such action now especially Irish Americans? Will they finally see that the IRA and Real IRA are terrorists or will they still choose to ignore such a fact? Is America with the rest of us at war with all terrorists or as usual only selectively at war with whom America defines as whom or what is a terrorist. Will Mr Bush try to stop all Real IRA funding from within the USA, only time will tell.
