7 March 1876 Alexander Graham Bell was issued
with a patent – No 174,465 – for the equipment that put voices on a
wire. Three days later, on 10 March, Bell reputedly spoke to his assistant
Thomas Watson the first recognisable words ever transmitted by telephone.
Using 100 metres of wire he transmitted the words: “Mr Watson, come
here. I want you.” |
