Jurong Bird Park - Singapore 2006
|
Jurong Bird Park in Singapore is a mixed experience in that there are some fabulous displays of birds, some very large open aviaries and some excellent entertainment. On the other hand some birds are caged in aviaries far too small, have little exercise and it is all too much of a reminder of zoos of the past. The worst example is the nocturnal bird house which is darkened for the birds. Visitors are told not to take pictures or knock on the glass etc so as not to disturb the birds in their 'natural' habitat. Of course every camera is used and flashes disturbing the birds or visitors knock on the windows to get the birds' attention. I din not feel this was good treatment of animals at all. On the positive side they have trained some birds to do some excellent entertainment out in the open, they have a good breeding program for rare birds and they have the largest aviary for birds in the world which is used for the entertaining Lorys. I guess there is a balance somewhere here. Again click on the pictures for more detail. |
