Sheila's Cumbrian roots actually start a little further back but this tree sets the scene, the key figure is Esther Proddow grandmother of Elizabeth Annie Fenton. In the early to mid 1800s the Proddow family were business people in the Keswick textile industry, moving south to investigate new pastures in Galgate near Lancaster some of them plied their trade at the Ellel Silk Mill. Here Esther Proddow met and married Henry Brining, a silk dresser, their daughter Ann was Sheila's Great Great Grandmother. Henry Brining also had a Cumbrian connection, his mother Elizabeth Cartmel, who ran the Ellel Grocery, was from Lorton west of Keswick. Through the Cartmel and Proddow lines we are able to trace further Cumbrian roots in the Keswick area as well as new lines in and around Kendal, Ennerdale, Lamplugh and Workington. Connections with the Patricksons, the so called 'Kings of Ennerdale,' and the Curwen family of Workington Hall make for a colourful genealogy that goes back many generations.

The most astonishing fact is that not only is Sheila a direct descendent of Cumbrian nobility, but she can also claim to be descended from the Kings of England and Scotland. Check out 'An Amazing Discovery' for the details.
