Baptised 19th June 1778 at Lorton (7 miles west of Keswick), daughter of John and Mary Cartmel of Buttermere. Betty, as she was popularly known, married William Bryning of Galgate, Silk Comber at St. Michael's Church, Cockerham on the 25th November 1799. We know of five children from this marriage Ellen (1802), William (1804), Elizabeth (1811), Henry (1813) and Mark (1815).

The 1841 Census for Ellel, gives Elizabeth's occupation as Grocer, address simply Galgate. Also to be found at the same address were daughter Ellen 39 and son Mark 25 (silk dresser), but no sign of husband William. On the 1851 Census (address 92 Galgate) Betty is a widow aged 72, born Keswick, occupation shopkeeper. Still at same address is Ellen 48 (unmarried Mill Hand), Mark 35 (married Mill Hand) plus wife Margaret and children Isabella and Elizabeth. Betty does not appear on the 1861 Census, by now Margaret is a widow and has taken over the Galgate Grocer's Shop.
