Fast Forward 24 Years.....

Quite out of the blue in October 2004 I received the following communication from Anthony Adams at the start of his first term at Brookes University. It gives a nice overview of how the establishment formerly known as Oxford Polytechnic looks today. Many thanks to Anthony for letting me use his words.

I started 3 weeks ago now and I'm really enjoying it. I'm working in the Gibbs building doing French and Tourism. Gibbs now holds Arts and Humanities and a small Nat West branch.

I am living in Clive Booth Halls which are brand new single study en suite next door to Marols. There are plenty of bars these days too, Morrell has a bar called Marols bar (very confusing names for us Freshers) and there are also 2 bars on the Headington Hill Campus (opposite the road from Gipsy Lane Campus) and there is also a huge venue aptly named 'the venue' for the binge drinkers among us!!

Wheatley still exists and is still stupidly remote, I haven't got there yet, I will one day.

There is also another campus now at Harcourt Hill, the other side of Oxford. Other developments I can guess from your website:

Cheney now is a student village accommodation next to Headington Park. I don't know where your Cheney was but this is brand new (opened last month) and very expensive!! There is also Warneford, a group of halls near Gipsy lane, and Paul Kent and Spencer Halls, at the end of Cowley Road.

Brookes also operates a 'free' bus service (the passes were paid for in our halls prices) that goes from Wheatley to Gipsy Lane to the Town centre to Harourt hill and another which winds around all the halls in the eastern suburbia of Oxford.

The music is getting better and better. I don't know how up to date you are with the current popular bands, but recent ones include Franz Ferdinand, Ash, Snow Patrol, Chesney Hawkes (!!!), and just last week Goldie Lookin' Chain.

These are held in the Helena Kennedy Centre which is on the Headington Hill Campus, where the club nights are held.

I hope this has been as interesting for you as your site was for me, since becoming a full Uni in 1992 Brookes has flourished and is a great place to be.
