Joseph Relph & Elizabeth Simson

Joseph and Elizabeth were married on 12th October 1734 at St Mary's, the Parish Church of Sebergham, Cumberland. They had nine children, Jane I (bapt Aug 1735, died July 1736), Jane II (b Dec 1736), Elizabeth (b May 1739), Rebecca (b Dec 1741, d Oct 1765), Catherine (b Feb 1744), Simeon (b Mar 1746), Joseph (b Feb 1748, d Nov 1781), Esther (b Oct 1749), Deborah (b Jan 1753).

Sebergham is bounded on the north and north-west by the parishes of Dalston and Westward, on the east and north-east by Castle Sowerby, and on the south and west by Caldbeck. The name Relph has been prominent in the history of Sebergham although direct connections with its more celebrated bearers and our particular branch of the family are unproven. Rev Josiah Relph (born December 1712) the renowned poet, curate and schoolmaster is probably best known and is buried in the churchyard. Hutchinson (1797) records that Sebergham Hall once belonged to Thomas Relph esq.
