Ken and Joan were married in 1943 at St. Gregory's, Horefield, Bristol. Joan's father Frank Shute answered his country's call and served with the Royal Gloucestershire Regiment during World War I. He was awarded the Military Medal for bravery under fire whilst attending to an injured soldier. He later suffered the effects of gas and was subsequently invalided out of the army, whereupon he joined BAC as a paint sprayer. Pauline Watts worked in service and as a nanny before marrying Frank at Knowle in 1919.
