The Front 9 on the hill was constructed in the late 1960's and early 1970's. It is set among some notable sites of historic and scientific interest. You will notice on the 4th, 5th and 6th especially, remnants of the hill fort defences where Caractacus stood against the Romans in A.D.50. Also you will play possibly the only hole in the world where you putt out in a different country to which you started the hole.
See Course History and the Environment for more detail.
Hole 1 Par 3 163 154 144 S.I. 17/16 Photos
A fairly straightforward par 3 to start but if the wind blows, take care.
Hole 2 Par 5 517 510 482 S.I. 7/7 Photos
A dog leg par 5 with out of bounds all the way down the right hand side
Hole 3 Par 3 156 145 137 S.I. 15/13 Photos
A devilish par 3, played about 10 yards inside Wales but England is out of bounds.
Hole 4 Par 4 339 331 324 S.I. 9/9 Photos
A unique hole in golf. Tee off in Wales, putt out in England
Hole 5 Par 4 359 348 340 S.I. 5/1 Photos
Dog leg left to an elevated green. The hill fort defence trenches can clearly be seen on the approach to the green.
Hole 6 Par 3 190 190 146 S.I. 13/18 Photos
Play from an elevated tee down to a long narrow green.
Hole 7 Par 4 415 388 372 S.I. 3/3 Photos
Back into Wales. From an elevated tee, into the prevailing wind this one can be a real test.
Hole 8 Par 4 352 339 334 S.I. 11/11 Photos
Dog leg right to an elevated green. A good position of the tee is required for a clear shot to the green.
Hole 9 Par 5 545 535 415 S.I. 1/5 Photos
Plays about 8 miles into the prevailing wind, need I say more?
The back 9 at Llanymynech is formed mainly from the original 9 holes built in the 1930's (See History). It is from these holes that the really spectacular views of the surrounding landscape can be appreciated, especially the 12th tee.
Hole 10 Par 3 177 168 115 S.I. 14/17 Photos
Over a ravine and two bunkers, simple! If you feel hard done by though take a look down to the 9th green, they played it from there in the old days!!
Hole 11 Par 4 254 248 225 S.I. 18/15 Photos
Over the highest point on the course and the view really is breathtaking, don't let the length of this hole fool you though, it can bite.
Hole 12 Par 4/5 437 432 415 S.I. 2/6 Photos
Linger on the tee briefly (Until the secretary hurries you along). From here on a clear day you can see Shropshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Derbyshire, Powys, Clwyd and Gwynedd. Not bad eh! The hole itself is one of the toughest up here, an undulating fairway to a basin green apart from the left side which drops away sharply.
Hole 13 Par 4 368 360 293 S.I. 6/10 Photos
Fairly straightforward par 4 as long as you don't stray left from the tee. Oh, I forgot, or right.
Hole 14 Par 5 491 479 463 S.I. 10/2 Photos
Tight from the tee, turning right and opening up to the green. Offa's Dyke footpath, which signifies the ancient border of Wales and England runs along the left of this hole.
Hole 15 Par 4/3 319 309 151 S.I. 16/14 Photos
Drive to the top of the ridge and play down to the basin green. Sorry, forgot to mention the large bunker in front and the ravine just to the right of the green. For the ladies a nice par 3 from the elevated tee.
Hole 16 Par 3 187 178 156 S.I. 12/12 Photos
This is a good one, uphill, into the prevailing wind, gorse and hawthorn bushes left, old mine shaft heads (safe) short and right. Walk on the tee, mark down three and a half and get on the next!
Hole 17 Par 4/5 394 387 382 S.I. 4/8 Photos
Tight fairway, not to be missed left as it slopes away. Missing the green left or right will leave a tough pitch.
Hole 18 Par 4 384 384 319 S.I. 8/4 Photos
Made it! Drive down from the elevated tee to a fairway that narrows and then up again to an elevated green. I'll say no more on this hole. We have to keep some of the surprises to ourselves. I'll give you a clue though, Cliff Edge is not a man to be walked over!!!
