Club History
Llanymynech hill had cemented it's place in history long before the game of golf was even considered. The Welsh leader Caractacus was widely thought to have made his last stand against the Romans here in A.D.50 before he was captured and taken to Rome.
Many Roman and Iron age artifacts have been found on the hill to back up this claim.
That wasn't the end of military activity on the hill, In the period of the first world war and after parts of the hill were used as a training ground, especially for rifleman and the rifle range targets are still in existence to the right of the 7th fairway
The first Golf Course on Llanymynech Hill was founded in 1903. However, it was known then as Oswestry Golf Club.
When they moved to their current location at Aston, Near Oswestry in 1930 then the course on the hill was left dormant. Eventually the greens were dug up and the ground turned over to sheep grazing. (There were sheep on the hill for another 45 years or so after this until the club secured the grazing rights. For the very wayward beware the sheep dipping pens away on the right of the 7th today)
3 years later in 1933 Llanymynech Golf Club was formed. Playing the original 9 holes which comprises mainly of todays back 9. (Though from some very peculiar angles). The original stone cottage was used as the clubhouse. A story exists of one member of the day getting his ball into the bar and having to chip his way through to the front door to get back to the course.
Construction of the front 9 began in the late 1960's and was completed when the 4th 5th and 6th holes were opened in 1973.
The irrigation system was added in 1977
These are the bare facts.
I am currently researching the above items in more detail and will be filling in the gaps, putting in some names and adding some photos soon.
