The first instrument I ever made was a mandolin. I was introduced to the mandolin earlier by my grandfather who played one. The mandolin is an Italian instrument that devises from a larger instrument called the Mandora and the lute family. This is why the original Italian Neapolitan mandolins had round backs. The flat back mandolins were being produced in France and Portugal by the 18th centery. This type of mandolin is truly a decendant of the cittern family and was called a descant cittern at one point. These instruments are more a sociated with folk musicians today.
