15 September

Close, but no Cigar

Having restricted Thames Ditton to 176 in their 40 overs on Saturday we felt that we had a chance, but it would be tough - and so it proved. Under the sunniest skies for many a month Dave Harry took four wickets and we held lots of lofty catches, altogether an enjoyable afternoon at Giggs Hill Green. After tea, we lost Richard Driver and Alex Ritchie early on, but Steve Hart (22) and Dave Harry (48) steadied things enough to make it exciting in the last 20 overs. The middle order kept it going but despite a late flurry we fell 9 runs short in the last over. It was a good game, but our tenth defeat of the year means we’ve produced the worst headline stats since 1979 with nine wins, (proliferation of 40 over games notwithstanding). There were some notable highlights nonetheless. Dave Harry and Alex Ritchie hit centuries, whilst Bernard’s 7 for 21 early in the season helped him top the wickets league with 21. The bowling trophy went to Clatters who calmly took 15 wickets at only 15.2. Clatters also put together the sunniest and arguably the best tour so far in cricketing terms.

Whilst you all eagerly await the full season review (don’t hold your breath), you’ll be pleased to know that the ex-skipper’s stats machine is back up and running. The Fixtures page now has all the pdf files for the individual matches, and the Season Stats are here and also on the Stats page.

Hart Fifty and Millar Wickets Lift the Gloom

Yes, it’s the headline you won’t often have read before, but Nick Hart’s 55 from 32 balls and Richard Millar’s devastating 3 for 18 livened up a 20-20 win over Sheen Park yesterday. After the official game was rained off we decided to play a quick 20-20, complete with music from Barnso’s car, hard hitting from Nick and Richard Driver, and a packed crowd of, er, 1.

We made 159 in our 20 overs and restricted Sheen early on in their response. This left the field clear for Richard Millar, resuming his bowling career after a 37 year gap, to take 3 for 18 and wrap things up. Coincidentally his previous bowling spell was against Sheen Park (guess who remembered that) and they are presumably therefore shoring up the batting for the  fixture in 2035. Because we’d decided in advance that the 20-20 was not an official match we still need to halt the run of defeats, but it was a great way of getting 2 hours cricket in before yet another heavy shower brought Autumn back to an autumnal season.

31 August

Washout

Well, after winning the first five games of the season we have now lost four in a row and six of the last seven. The main reason is a lack of availability caused by injuries as well as the normal clash of commitments. Recent games have seen the team struggle to make enough runs and this has led to defeats against Speenolians, Oakwood Hill and Old Wimbledonians in quick succession. With bad weather ruining the Clapham Inns fixture in between, it’s been a dismal August on the field for the club. As September arrives, the fixtures don’t get any easier but with the squad strengthening once again hopefully we can put an end to the run of losses.
