Folk
'Folk' music is dear to my heart and goes far wider and deeper than the 'uncool' image it presents to some.
In fact, you can hear acoustic instruments in lots of contemporary music, even the Boy/Girl band stuff!.......and all those fantastic 'Unplugged' albums of recent years really gave 'Folk ' music a boost.
Folk music can be old or new. The Folk I play is stuff by the likes of Richard Thompson, Steve Tilston, Dougie MacLean, Archie Fisher, Paul Simon, Jez Lowe, Bob Dylan, Tim Hardin and many more.
I've also written quite a few. I tend to write optimistic or positive songs about human kindness, natural beauty and things that are good.
I don't write very many about death, destruction or the break-up of relationships - there are quite a lot of those about anyway!
Guitarwise, I play 'straight' or in different tunings if they bring out the shine in the song.
Guitarists who I like (and extract from) include Dougie MacLean, Richard Thompson, Archie Fisher, Robbie Robertson, Ry Cooder and James Taylor.
Here are some of the songs I perform:-
