Barber's Littleport & District Directory & Almanack

For nearly 100 years there was a printed book available in Littleport that was full of information about the town along with a listing of every address and name of every resident in the village and surrounding area. It also contained  Marrages and Burials listed for the previous year as well as newpaper items of local interest.
It was in the year 1897 that the late William Charles Barber produced the first Household Almanack and Street Directory ever printed and published in Littleport.

In those days it was no mean accomplishment to produce even such a modest little book, but sustained by enthusiasm and untiring perseverance, Mr Barber overcame all obstacles, and the Almanack was born.

Mr Barber, himself, was a man of genial disposition and sterling character, and was greatly respected by all who knew him. He died on April 21st, 1929, aged 70 years.

Due to the amount of information in these books I have used a hand-held scanner and OCR software to extract some of the information. Click on the links under the cover pictures to go to the information. (Please note that my OCR software is not perfect in translating pictures to words so there may be some spelling mistakes in the extracted text. If you wish to contact me to confirm any details in the extracted information please e-mail me).

Remember, the information in each book is historical, that means that the information in the 1947 book is from the previous years 1945-1946 etc..

Littleport Official Guide

The almanack was changed in the late 1960's, early 1970's to become the Official Guide and Street Directory. It still had a full listing of every resident in the village and still retained newspaper articles of local interest over the past two years.
