December, 1959
2--Over Sixties' Club annual party. The cake was cut by the two
oldest members present--Mr. and Mrs. R. Coverdale.
Following an accident near the Ex-Servicemen's Club, Mr. B. C. Dodman, of New Road, was
detained at the R.A.F. Hospital, Ely. He had been involved in a collision with a car
driven by his neighbour, Mr. Sidney Creak.
4--P.c. J. E. Evison gave demonstrations and talks on road drill to children of the
Coronation School, Black Horse Drove.
9--Members of the Women's Fellowship paid a visit to the Anglia Television Studios at
Norwich where they formed the main part of the audience at the Mid-Day Show.
"Eldernell", a small modern residence at 46, High Street, Littleport, was sold
for &3,500 by Messrs. George Comins and Son at the Constitutional Hall. Purchaser was
Mr. A. Dewey of Eltham, London, S.E.9. The property was sold by order of Mr. C. J. E. S.
Fendick.
9--10-Children of the County Primary School gave a delightful presentation of "Oliver
Twist". The role of Oliver was played by Rodney Watson.
10--Meeting at Ely of the Ely Methodist Circuit. It was agreed to buy land at Littleport
for the erection of a new manse.
12--Miss Margaret Davy, headmistress of the County Primary School, opened the Parish
Church Christmas Fair. The proceeds amounted to £125.
Adjudged one of Britain's most "road-safety conscious" motorcyclists of 1959,
Mr. P. C. Johnson, of the Littleport and District Motor-cycle Club was presented with the
Auto-Cycle Union's Road Safety Badge.
13--St. John's Methodist Sunday School annual toy service for the Dalston Mission in
London.
15--Pupils who were leaving or who had left during the year attended a school leavers
celebration party at the Martin School.
17--Mr. L. Harle, of Littleport, gained a first prize with his entry of a pen of 7 store
pigs at Messrs, A. T. Grain & Sons' fat stock show held at Ely.
18--Mr. and Mrs. Percy Harley, of Station Road, celebrated their golden wedding
anniversary
18--Engagement announced between Mr. Richard Mickleburgh, of Houghton-on-the-Hill,
Leicestershire, and Miss Sylvia Neve, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Neve, of
Hitches Street, Littleport.
20--The choir of St. John's Church, Little Ouse, wore their new robes for the first time.
The occasion was the annual carol service.
24--Midnight Mass was celebrated at the Parish Church. There were 105 Communicants.
25--Members of the various denominations in Littleport attended a united service at the
Independent Chapel.
Mr. and Mrs. A. Spinks, of Little Downham, announced the engagement of their daughter,
Daphne, to Mr. George Law, third son of Mrs. and the late Mr. R. E. Law, of Wisbech Road,
Littleport.
Engagement announced between Mr. Graham Bristow, of Ely, and Miss Myrtle Pendle, third
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pendle, of Fir Tree Farm, Brandon Bank.
26--Marriage, at Tonbridge, Kent, of Mr. John Underdown, of Black Horse Drove, and Miss
Phyllis Munton, of Tonbridge.
Hiam Sports and Social Club's annual drawing match held at Letter "F" Farm.
First prize winners were B. Gipp (horse) and F. Baker (tractors).
31--At examinations held in connection with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of
Music, Movita Halls, of Littleport, was successful in pianoforte playing, Grade IV.
31--The following rainfall figures for Littleport were recorded by Messrs. J. H. Martin
and Sons (Littleport) Ltd., who have been officially recording for the Air Ministry and
the British Rainfall Organisation since 1891. The total for 1959 was 17.11 inches,
compared with 26.87 in 1958. This is the lowest figure since 1929 when it was 16.91 and
1921 when it was 11.58.

1--Mr. Geoffrey Crabbe, only son of Mrs. Crabbe and the late Mr.
Crabbe, of Saffron Close, Littleport, was married at Great Molton Parish Church, Norfolk,
to Miss Mary Potter, of Great Molton.
Engagement announced between Heber, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Martin, of Highfield House,
Littleport, and Elsie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James McCracken, of Donaghadee, Co. Down.
Mr. and Mrs. L. Ayres, of New River Bank, announced the engagement of their only son Brian
to Miss Patricia Legge, of Southery.
Engagement announced between Paul, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Burton, of Ten Mile Bank,
and Pamela, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. Neal, of Wisbech Road, Littleport.
3--Motor Cycling--The Les Ayres Trophy Trial, organised by the Littleport and District
Motor Cycle Club, was won by P. Hammond. The best performance by a member of the
Littleport Club was put up by N. W. Howe. He was awarded the Lancaster Cup.
A 16 year old French girl, Mlle. Brigitte Beaucherie, returned home after spending a
fortnight as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. R. Smith of Black Horse Drove. Brigitte, a Paris
school-girl is a pen friend of Mr. and Mrs. Smith's eldest daughter Hazel who is a pupil
at Ely High School.
5--The Managers of Burnt Fen School decided to close the school. Two years notice of
closure was given to the Ministry of Education.
7--Monthly meeting of Littleport British Legion Women's Section. County Needlework awards
were presented to Mrs. F. Sallis (gold star and certificate) and Mrs. H. Saul
(certificate),
9--Littleport Wheelers Cycling Club's supper and prize presentations. Mr. Gordon Driver
was presented with an inscribed pocket watch to mark the members' appreciation of his
efforts on behalf of the Club.
A united Crusade Rally held at the Salvation Army Hall concluded Littleport's Universal
Week of Prayer.
12--At the monthly meeting of the Women's Institute, Mrs. J. Gilbert was presented with
the trophy for gaining most points in competitions during 1959. The Produce Guild award
went to Miss M. Adams.
19--Sub-Area finals of the "News of the World" darts tournament held at Ely. J.
Murfet, of Black Horse Drove, succeeded in reaching the area finals.
22--The Rev. Canon J. K. C. Payne celebrated the twenty-first anniversary of his Ministry
in Littleport.
25--Members of the Ely Youth Centre visited Black Horse Drove Community Centre to play the
semi-finals of the Senior table Tennis Tournament in the County Youth competition Black
Horse Drove won, 9-0.
26--Women's Institute annual New Year party. The guests numbered 110.
Annual Party for members of the Infant Welfare Centre. A presentation was made to Nurse
Biart who was shortly leaving Littleport for missionary service overseas.
27--Littleport Ladies' and Male Voice Choirs presented a concert at St. Paul's Methodist
Church Hall, March, under the conductor ship of Miss M. Bishop and Mr. K. Peggs.
Annual meeting of Littleport Bowls Club. It was reported that out of 27 matches played,
the club had won 21.
Members of Black Horse Drove infant Welfare Clinic welcomed Nurse Benton.
February 1960
1--Sister C. M. Biart left Littleport to commence training for her
missionary work at Mount Hermon Missionary Training College, London. Sister Biart, a
Queen's Nurse, came to Littleport 12 years ago.
2--Meeting of the Isle of Ely Education Committee. It was agreed that until such time as
suitable premises be found or provided, the governors of the Martin School, Littleport, be
asked to permit the use of part of the school premises for youth purposes.
The following pupils of Littleport Schools were successful in the Isle of Ely Schools'
Road Safety Essay Competition:--P. A. MacGregor, Jennifer Fletcher (first prize winners);
Virginia Wilkinson (second prize); Phillip Wright (third prize); Richard Youngs (highly
commended).
Death at St. Ovin's Green, Ely, of Mr. Elisha Brown, a native of Littleport, Mr. Brown had
lived in Ely for the past 25 years. He was 73.
3--Mothers' Union New Year party. An iced cake was presented to the Vicar and Mrs. Payne
in appreciation of their good work for the Mothers' Union during their 21 years at
Littleport.
5--Death, at Newmarket General Hospital, of Mr. Edward Mortimer Rose, formerly of
Plantation House, Littleport. Mr. Rose, who was 69, came to Littleport in 1918 as farm
manager for Mr, Henry Thompson's Littleport estate, a position from which he retired in
July last year when he left to take up residence at Burwell.
Children of Little Ouse County Primary School collected £2 for the Isle of Ely Society
for the Blind.
6--Rabbits exhibited in the Histon Club show by Mr. C. B. Cadnum, of Friars Way, gained
five first prizes and the best-in-show award.
Death at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, of Mrs. Julia Taylor, formerly of Ely. Aged
90, she was the widow of the late Mr. Gillet Taylor, a member of a well-known Littleport
family, who died 15 years ago.
10--A precept of £3,250, equal to a l 1/2d. rate, was levied by Littleport Parish
Council. It included £100 for the possible erection of a bus shelter in Church Lane and
£300 for the purchase of a site for the proposed swimming pool.
County Youth senior darts competition, semi-final--Black Horse Drove Youth Club defeated
the A.C.F. Youth Club at Chatteris, 6--3.
11l--Death of Mrs. Daisv Evans, of Cambridgeshire Close, Ely. Born at Littleport, Mrs.
Evans had lived the latter part of her life in Ely. She was 70.
Dr. J, L. Burnet, of Mow Fen Hall, Littleport was appointed a Trustee of the Ely branch of
the Midlands Savings Bank.
14--128 anglers from a wide area fished in the Littleport Angling Club's annual winter
gala match. Local anglers gained the first four places. They were S. Kitchen, D. V. G.
Clarke, R. Angel, and J. Butcher.
16--Potato crop mechanisation conference organised by the National Agricultural Advisory
Service was held at the Martin School. 250 attended.
Death at his home at Wisbech of Mr. Charles Goddard. He was 86. Born at Reading, Mr.
Goddard moved from there in 1899 to become a master at the Littleport Town Boys' School.
In 1926 he and his wife moved to the Dairy Houses School, Littleport, of which they were
jointly in charge. In 1932 Mr. Goddard took up an appointment as Headmaster at Black Horse
Drove School, where his wife became Headmistress. He retired in 1937.
17--Spoons for points won in competitions were presented to Mrs. C. Fletcher and Miss
Thulbourn at a meeting of the Women's Fellowship.
18--"News of the World" lndividual Darts championships area finals held at Ely.
J, Murfet, of Black Horse Drove, was beaten by J. Allen, of Chatteris.
Mr. P. V. Cooper who recently retired from service as a postman, was the recipient of a
Long Service Medal. The presentation was made by the Head Postmaster, Mr. A. Nix, of Ely.
19--Engagement announced between Brian Albert, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Bishop, of
Mill House, The Chase, Littleport, and Heather Hazel, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.
Gregory, of Hill Farm, Mildenhall Road, Littleport.
20--Following an accident in Wellington Street, Mr. Ernest Hodson of Ponts Hill, was
detained at the R.A.F. Hospital, Ely, suffering from head injuries.
A team of four scholars, representing Black Horse Drove Methodist Sunday School, took part
in the third round of the East Anglian Methodist Bible Quiz held at East Dereham. They
were beaten by a team from Mattishall, Norfolk, by 89 points to 88.
21--72nd anniversary of the Littleport Salvation Army Corps. A distinguished visitor was
Lt. Col. Bramwell Mason, of London, who was in command of the Littleport Corps over 30
years ago.
24--Mr. Maurice Crouch, of March, the Cambs. County Cricket Club captain, was the guest of
honour at the annual dinner of the Littleport Cricket Club.
26--The engagement was announced between Alan, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Mills, of
Barway and Janice, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Pettengell, of Black Horse Drove.
27--Miss E. Bridgfordd of Littleport, was married to Mr. J. Fuller, of Ely, at St. Mary's
Church, Ely.
28--Death at Doddington of Mr. Joseph William Brown, aged 67. Mr. Brown, who was landlord
of "The Rising Sun" Inn, Littleport, for 20 years, moved to Doddington in 1949.
March. 1960
1--Annual meeting at the Primary School of Littleport Parent-Teacher
Association. The Chairman (Miss M. Davy) mentioned the gift of an oak lectern which had
been presented to the school by Miss Jean Firby, a former scholar, now at Mount School,
York.
Meeting of Little Ouse and Brandon Bank Women's Institute. A talk on the use of the latest
types of spin and warm air driers was given by Mrs. Yates on behalf of the Eastern
Electricity Board.
2--Marriage at Cambridge between Roger, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Law, of 5
Hempfield Road, Littleport, and Dierdre, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Amsden, of
Hadstock, near Linton, Cambridge.
4--A special United Service was held at the Salvation Army Hall in connection with the
annual Women's World Day of Prayer. The theme of the service was "Labourers together
with God" and Mrs. J. H. Martin spoke on this subject.
Mr. Hubert Theobald, a former Littleport resident now living at Lincoln, was presented
with an engraved watch by his firm (Messrs. Wynn's Pumps Ltd.), in appreciation of 40
years' faithful service. Mr. Theobald is the elder son of the late Mr. and Mrs. G.
Theobald, of Station Road, Littleport, and a brother of Mrs. Edwin R. Cross, of Mill
Field. He is married with one daughter, and lives at Lincoln. His firm supplied the
present day pumping machinery at Denver Sluice.
6--Catholic Church--Father L, Hammond made his first visit to Littleport and spoke on the
ways in which people could help the Children's Socicty of the diocese.
8--A demonstration on the making of hats was given by Mrs. Keane, of Huntingdon, at a
meeting of Littleport Women's Institute.
l0--County Youth Darts Tournament. Black Horse Drove Youth Club won the senior
championship by defeating Manea by five legs to four. The Black Horse Drove team was F.
Callaby T. Patterson and B. Clarke.
11--The following pupils from local schools succeeded In passing the 11 plus

12--littleport British Legion Band individual darts tournament. Eric Taylor won the Grand
Challenge Shield for the third successive year, beating Peter Scott in the final.
16--Final of the County Youth senior table tennis competition. Wisbech Youth Club defeated
Black Horse Drove Youth Club.
Annual general meeting of Littleport Cricket Club. The Secretary (Mr. F. Watson) reported
a "best ever" number of games played--86 in all.
Wisbech and District Boys' Brigade Group annual cup competitions held at Wisbech. All of
the four cups were won by the 1st Littleport Company.
17--P.c. Morton of Littleport gave the second of his series of talks on road safety to
children of Little Ouse County Primary School,
22--A highly successful Women's Institute group meeting was held at the Constitutional
Hall, Representatives from six branches attended.
25--Table Tennis--Ely and District Table Tennis Championships. Norman South retained only
one of his two titles, winning the final of the closed handicap singles but losing in the
final of the closed singles.
26--Mr. and Mrs. Horace Rowell, of Ely Road, celebrated their fiftieth wedding
anniversary.
Tragic death on the Feltwell-Southery road of Mr. Herbert Murfet, 69 years-old smallholder
of Black Horse Drove. Mr. Murfet. who was riding on the draw bar of a trailer fell under
the trailer wheel and was killed. The driver of the tractor towing the trailer was Mr.
Murfet's son.
At the County Youth Festival of Dancing, held at Whittlesey, the Martin School gained a
first in the largest section--that for country and folk dancing. Their item was "All
the way to Galway." The Littleport scholars met with further success in the square
dancing section, taking first place with "Billy Boy", and a second with "La
Russe."
Death at Ely of Mr. William Clarke, a former resident of Black Horse Drove. He was 80.
Death, at his home in Romford, Essex, of Mr. John W. Rogers, a former resident of
Littleport. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rogers, of Westlands,
St. Matthew's. He was 67.
30--Five branches of the British Legion and three of the Women's Sections attended a Group
meeting at the Oddfellow's Hall, Littleport.
April .1960
1--Nursing success--Miss Jean.Atkinson, the third daughter of Mr. and
Mrs, A. Atkinson, of 38, The Crescent, was successful in passing her S.R.N. examination.
Monthly meeting of the Over Sixties' Club. A two minutes silence was observed in memory of
the late Mrs. E, England.
2--The Over Sixties' Club Spring fair was opened by Mrs. James Gilbert, The proceeds
amounted to approximately £40.
2--Marriage at Cambridge between Mr. Laurence Gillett, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E.
Gillett, of Black Horse Drove, and Miss Margaret Noakes, of Cambridge.
3--Distinguished visitors to the Salvation Army were the new Division Commander, Senior
Major L. Pender and Mrs. Pender, of Norwich .
All services at St. John's Methodist Church were conducted by Miss Miller, an American
lady.
4--Miss Thelma Frost gave a talk on Pakistan at a meeting of the Mothers' Union, Miss
Frost is secretary to the Bishop of Ely.
Annual Easter concert by pupils of the Martin School.
5--Monthly meeting of Little Ouse and Brandon Bank Women's Institute. Mrs. P. Radcliffe of
Littleport, gave a talk and demonstration on corsetry.
8--In examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, the following
pupils of Mrs. Charles Haines were successful; Piano, Grade 1, primary, Linda Law (pass),
Hazel Malkin (merit); Grade 2, elementary, Brenda Malkin (merit); Grade5, higher, Ann
Clift (pass); Theory of Music, Grade 2, Brenda Malkin.
12--Monthly meeting of Littleport Women's Institute. The special speaker was Dr. K. S.
Maurice-Smith, of Ely. He impressed on all parents the importance of taking full advantage
of the immunisations available today.
13--A story of wanton destruction in the Littleport Camping Close Playing Field was told
by Coun. J. Crane at the meeting of the Littleport Parish Council. He illustrated his
remarks with boards which he said had obviously been kicked from the bandstand. The roof
of the bandstand had been covered with bricks which had been thrown on to it, and windows
and tiles in the shelter and toilets had been broken.
Captain G. H. Robbins of Little Ouse gave the last of his sermons on "The Fruits of
the Spirit'· at the Parish Church.
15--Good Friday--A united service held at St, John's Methodist Church was conducted by the
Minister, the Rev. J. R. Lusty. The sermon was delivered by Capt. Lawrence Fisher, of the
Salvation Army.
The engagement was announced between Brenda, daughter of Mr. A. Hines, of 3, Mildenhall
Road, Littleport, and John, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. B, Scott, of 27, Friars Place,
Littleport.
Engagement announced between Mr, Rrian Everitt, of Wilburton, and Miss Linda Nunn, only
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Nunn, of Bells Farm, Wisbech Road, Littleport.

16--House-to-House collections made by members of the Women's Fellowship in aid of the

16--Marriage at St. Mary's Church, Ely, between Miss Annie Bridgford, youngest daughter of
Mr, and Mrs. F. W. Bridgford, of Wisbech Road, Littleport, and Mr. Cecil Jones, of Soham.
17--Easter Sunday--There were 145 Communicants at the Parish Church.
18--The British Legion Band gained two first awards in the East Anglian Brass Band
Association's contest held at Norwich.
Annual meeting of the Littleport and Prickwillow Nursing Association. The secretary (Miss
M. A. Peake) spoke of the money-raising effort in aid of the Queen's Institute of District
Nursing Centenary appeal which had reached the sum of £300.
20--Annual meeting of the lsle of Ely Federation of Women's Institutes at Chatteris. It
was revealed that Mrs. T. B. Gordon of Little-port had had a pottery bowl on show in the
Country Year Exhibition in London and that Miss Adams was a prize winner in the Produce
Guild competition.
22--The Over Sixties' Club celebrated their fourth anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. J, Cole, of
Parsons Lane, announced the engagement of their eldest daughter Barbara Julie, to
Christopher Russell eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Brown, of Wellington Street.
27--Representatives of the various denominations and local organisations and societies
attended a meeting at the Constitutional Hall to discuss plans for an all-out effort in
Littleport in aid of the World Refugee Appeal. Mr. J. H. Martin presided.
Meeting of the County Highways Committee--Speaking about the junction of The Hythe and
Silt Road with the Trunk road to the north of Littleport, Coun. W. Leggett said, "I
have been asked on numerous occasions why we have not done something. It is time something
was done in the interests of road safety."
29--The engagement was announced between Mr. Eric Crofts, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. S. E.
Crofts, of Mildenhall Road, Littleport, and Miss Jenny Drew, of Mundford.
Football--C. Harley, goalkeeper for Littleport County Primary School XI, was chosen to
play for the South Isle Junior Schools against a combined Fulbridge and Dogsthorpe Schools
XI (Peterborough).
Mrs. Emily Benstead announced her retirement after twenty years as cleaner at Littleport
St. Matthew's Parish Church.
30--Marriage at St. Mary's Church, Ely, between Miss Freda Turner, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. C. Turner, of Wisbech Road, Littleport, and Mr. David Ridgeon, of Ely.
March and District Billards League dinner and trophy presentations. The Rothschild Cup,
won by the Littleport British Legion team, was presented to Mr. C. Parsons, the team's
captain.
Local collections in aid of the Cancer Campaign realised £48 9s. 1d. The organiser was
Mrs. W. J. Gill, President of the Women's Institute, with members as collectors.
30--Marriage at the Catholic Church, Ely, of Miss Mary Collins, of Tournafulla, Limerick,
Ireland, and Mr. Derek Ward, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Ward, of Black Horse Drove,
Littleport.
A sale of work organised by the local Red Cross Detachment in aid of their funds realised
over £60.
May.1960
1--Industrial Sunday. In an address to his parishioners, the Rev.
Sidney Chambers, Vicar of St, Matthew's, spoke of the moral responsibilities of both
employers and employees.
Littleport British Legion Band presented a musical concert at the Constitutional Hall.
Miss Catherine Baxter, former County Music Adviser, compered the items.
3--Boys' Brigade annual inspection, display and prize giving. The drummers' trophy was won
by Pte. R. Dixon and the buglers' award went to Pte. A. Roberts.
Annual Easter Vestry and Parochial Church Council meeting. Mr. R. B. Thurlow
(secretary-treasurer) reported a balance in hand of £267 in the Lady Chapel fund.
Celebration of Little Ouse and Brandon Bank Women's Institute's 40th Birthday. Mrs.
Mortimer Rose, a former president, was a guest.
4--Annual meeting of the East Anglian United District of the Loyal Order of Ancient
Shepherds held at Ely. Brother W. Saul of Littleport was elected to the office of Deputy
Chief Shepherd.
5--Mr. Herber Martin, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Martin, of Highfield House, was
married in lreland to Miss Elsie Mc-Cracken, of Donaghadee, County Down. The ceremony took
place in Donaghadee Methodist Church.
6--Cricket-The Happy Wanderers opened the season at Black Horse Drove with a victory by 24
runs to 19.
8--Cycling-Roy Murfitt, of Littleport Wheelers, finished eighth in the Cambridge Town and
County C.C. 74-mile road race. Half the field of 40 retired.
11--littleport Women's Institute "Members' Night". The social programme was
arranged by Mrs. D. Quigley.
13--Over Sixties' Club meeting. It was announced that the Littleport Ladies' Choir had
donated £20 to the Club, this being the proceeds from the choir's carol singing at
Christmas.
Mr. and Mrs, Starling of New Barns Avenue, Ely, announced the engagement of their eldest
daughter, Valerie Jean, to Peter John, only son of Mr. and Mrs. M. S. Stephens, of the
Black Horse Hotel, Littleport.
It was revealed that in a recent flag-day collection, Mrs. T. Rowell and her band of
helpers had collected over £12 for the Royal National Life-Boat Institution.
14--Isle of Ely Musical Festival held at Wisbech. Littleport Ladies' Choir, under the

21--A Morris van driven by Mr. John Constable, of Parsons Lane, overturned and crashed
into the drain at Gilgal corner. Although the front of the vehicle was almost completely
submerged, Mr. Constable was able to escape with only minor injuries. The van belonged to
Messrs. R. E. Law Ltd.
Mrs. Alice Kent, who recently celebrated her 99th birthday, set off for London to spend a
few weeks with a daughter. Mrs. Kent is a widow, her husband having died nearly 30 years
ago. Eight of her family of 14 are still living.

25--Annual meeting of Littleport Parish Council. A letter was read from the Ministry of
Housing and Local Government which said the Council's proposals for a swimming pool had

1--Mr. Charles Key, a former Littleport man, now living in Bellingen,
New South Wales, Australia, was appointed bandmaster of the Bellingen Shire Band. Mr. Key,
who is the third son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Key, of the Railway Tavern, Littleport, left the
village ten years ago for Australia, his wife being a native of that country.
2--Miss J, Tebbutt, of Haddenham, gave a talk to members of the British Legion Women's
Section. Her subject was "The duties of a magistrate."
3--Littleport's Refugee Week yielded £124 16s. 8d.
News received of the death, at Hoddeston, Herts., of Mr. Willie Hobbs, formerly of Station
Road, Littleport.
Littleport Town Football Club donated a gift of £10 to the Over Sixties' Club.
4--Littleport Wheelers sports. Before a small crowd, Empire Games cycling champion Neville
Tong, won the Five Miles National Championship, dethroning Eric Thompson.
7--Members of Black Horse Drove Women's Institute celebrated the Institute's twelfth
birthday. All over-sixties in the village were invited.
By notifying the Fire Station of a burning tree at the back of Highfield and keeping the
fire down by using water from a nearby horse-trough until firemen arrived, Graham
Gathercole and Ivor Greenacre, aged twelve and ten respectively, prevented what might have
been a serious outbreak.
8--Coun. H. K. Cross, of Littleport, was elected chairman of the Ely Rural District
Council for the coming year.
10--The engagement was announced between Miss Diana Ellingham, of Ely, and Mr. Brian

British Legion Band's garden fete transferred to the Constitutional Hall owing to stormy

In a scripture examination held in connection with the Ely Methodist Circuit Sunday
Schools, Moira Gotobed, of Littleport, was awarded a first prize in the upper junior
division.
After serving the people of the hamlet and people from Littleport for more than 100 years,
Chettisham railway station was permanently closed to passenger traffic.
13--Meeting of Black Horse Drove Community Association. It was reported that £17 had been
donated to Littleport's Refugee Fund from the village together with a generous amount of
clothing for the refugees.
14--Monthly meeting of Littleport Women's Institute. Mrs. W. J. Gill (president) spoke of
the branch's success at the County Show, when their co-operative entry was awarded third
place.
15--Farewell service for Miss Biart held at St. John's Methodist Church. Miss Biart,
formerly one of Littleport's District Nurses, was shortly leaving England for missionary
work with the Zambesi Mission in Nyasaland. Farewell presentations were made to Nurse
Biart on behalf of the residents of Black Horse Drove and mothers of the Black Horse Drove
Welfare Clinic.
17--The engagement was announced of Miss Monica Stretton of Peterborough, and Mr. Charles
Fletcher, youngest son of Mr. L. Fletcher and the late Mrs. Fletcher, of Friars Way.

18--Huntington Agricultural Societys' Show. In the horse classes Mr F.G.Starling with his
Percheron, "Freeman" won his own challenge cup which he had donated for the best
animal of that breed. "His Grand Excellency" brought Mr. Starling further
honours in the hunter classes as he won the challenge cup awarded to the best animal in
that section.
20--Six shopkeepers in Ely and Littleport discovered they had lost £1 each after being
visited by the Police. The reason was that they had come into possession of skilfully
forged banknotes such as were being passed in the southern and eastern counties.
24--IsIe of Ely County Teachers' Association met at the Martin School. Mr. D. H. Speed
introduced a motion expressing his idea that consideration should be given to the need for
accepting sport and athletics as examination subjects.
Mr. and Mrs. A. Atkin, of Ely, announced the engagement of their daughter Doris, and
Derek, elder son of Mrs. I. Burling and the late Mr. Burling, of 37, Friar's Way,

19--Open day at the County Primary School. The Leggett prize for all-round ability was
shared by Stewart Murfitt and Jean Andrews, and the Head Teacher's prizes for improvement

20--The Chairman of Ely Rural District Council, Coun. H, K. Cross, and Mrs. Cross were
among the guests at a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace.
21--Martin School Sports. During the term three pupils gained their County Sports Badges.
They were Patricia Kerridge, Maurice Webber and Valerie Speed.
22--Engagement announced between Mr. Anthony Ball, of Ely, and Miss Mildred Fisher, only
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Fisher, of The Hythe, Littleport.
23--Littleport Horticultural and Foal Show Society's 71st annual show. A big drop in the
attendance and the tragic death of Mr. C. J. Searle, of Chittering, who collapsed and died
while showing a foal, marred the day. In the cycling events, Neville Tong won the
Littleport Wheelers 100-guinea challenge cup outright.
A young local serviceman had the distinction of leading a Royal Air Force party up
Kilimanjaro--the famous mountain in Tanganyika, 19,565 feet high. He was S.A.C. Michael
Hollands, stationed in Kenya. A native of Littleport, he has lived most of his life in
Soham, but expects to return to Littleport in April or May next year after two years in
Africa. The climb was made under the R.A.F. "Outward Bound" training scheme.
Death at Cambridge, of Mrs. Louisa Morton. Mrs. Morton was the wife of the late Mr. G. C.
Morton, formerly of Littleport. She was 96.
29--Mr. and Mrs. Tony Collen, now living in Australia, announced the birth of a son. Mrs.
Collen was formerly Miss Gail Gipp, of Littleport.

l--Police-Sergeant W. G. Eagle, promoted to the rank of Inspector,
moved from Littleport to Ely. Sergeant R. Sival, newly appointed officer-in-charge at
Littleport, took over his new duties.
2--Mr. Charles Sizer, aged 40, of 22, New Road Littleport, collapsed and died while
cycling along the Mildenhall Road near Littleport Bridge.
4--Monthly meeting of the British Legion Women's Section. The announcement that the
newly-purchased headquarters hut was erected and was in course of being decorated and
fitted with the necessary amenities was warmly received.
6--Marriage at St. Peter's Church, Prickwillow, of Miss Joan Ashley, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. G. E. Ashley, of Council Houses, Burnt Fen, and Mr. Aubrey Scarff, youngest son of

19--As the result of an audition last December at Cambridge, Brian Halls, a young and
popular musician, toured Scotland with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain as
one of the trumpet players. Brian is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Halls, of 3, Globe
Lane.
Miss Vivienne Convine, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Convine, of Drage Farm, Wood
Fen gained her post graduate certificate in education with distinction as a result of a
recent examination at the University of London Institute of Education. She will take up an
appointment at The Beale Grammar School for Girls, Ilford, in September.
21--Miss Diane Cole and Miss Sandra Brightley were enrolled as senior soldiers at a
Salvation Army Meeting.
22--Crickett-The Happy Wanderers, who represented Littleport British Legion in the British
Legion County Cup, were beaten in the final by Bottisham British Legion. The match was
played at Cambridge.
26--News received of the death at her home in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, of Mrs. Watson
Gledhill, a member of a well-known local family. Mrs. Gledhill, who was aged 69, was the
second daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. South Gilson, formerly of Ten Mile Bank Road, She
leaves a widower and two sons.

30--Catering Success--Miss Gloria Passfield, daughter of Mrs. A.Wicks, of Littleport, and
the late L/CpI. A. Passfield, C.M.P., and an ex pupil of Littleport Secondary School, was
the winner of Class 2 in the recent Cambridge Technical College catering exhibition.

organised by the Over Sixties' Club. Proceeds were £56.
4--Little Ouse and Brandon Bank Women's Institute's monthly meeting included a harvest
service conducted by Mr. E. Youngs, of Littleport, and Capt. G. H. Robbins.
The Isle of Ely County Youth Sub-Committee recommended that provision be made for suitable
youth service accommodation adjoining the Martin School, Littleport. They also recommended
that alterations and additions be carried out at a cost of £1,300 to Black Horse Drove
Youth and Community Centre.
5--Mr. D. H. Speed, of the Martin School, gave a talk to members of Black Horse Drove
Women's Institute. His subject was "Keeping fit".
6--Death at Ten Mile Bank, Littleport, of Mr. C. H. Macmillan, aged 77 years.

most points gained in competitions during the year was presented to Mrs. L, Thurling.
14--Women's World Day of Prayer service held at Victoria Street Methodist Church. The
speaker was Mrs. Edwin Cross.
Mr. and Mrs, G. Levett, of 28, Hempfield Place, Littleport, announced the engagement of
their daughter Valerie, to Harold C. Reich, of Lewisville, North Carolina, U.S.A.
A balloon, bought at a Peterborough sports meeting by J. Andrews, of Woodfen Road,
Littleport, travelled a distance of 706 miles and won a second prize. The balloon was
picked up in Austria.
Mr. L. Oakey, employed on Mr. J. E. Kerridge's farm at Mare Fen, Littleport, won both the
County and Ely N.F.U. branch thatching competitions with the same pair of stacks. Other
local prize winners were Mr. H. Pope, also employed by Mr. Kerridge, and Mr. A. W.
Bonnett, employed by Messrs. Morton Bros., of Westlands.
15--The gross proceeds of the "Black and White Minstrel Fayre", organised by
Littleport Women's Institute, were £139 18s. 1d. The opener was Dr. A. L. Cheyne.
16--Fishing in the Little Ouse River, 14 year old Alan Harrison, of Gilbert Road,
Littleport, landed a pike weighing 17 1/2 Ibs. The following members of the Littleport
Angling Club were included in the team to represent the lsle of Ely in the inter-counties
angling match at Offord Cluny, Hunts.--R. Angel (captain), J. Calladine, F. Proctor, W.
Gilbert, P. Angel, J. Butcher, D. V. Clarke and C. Kitchen.
17--Mr. and Mrs. John William Harrington, of Ferry Bank, Southery, and formerly of Black
Horse Drove, celebrated their golden wedding.
The garage of Mr. Joseph Lofts, station bus proprietor, of Crown Lane, was broken into and
a quantity of tools taken. The garage is situated in Mow Fen, off New Road.
19--Death at Hilgay of Mr. Joseph Groom, a former resident of Little Ouse and Littleport.
He was aged 81, and until his retirement some 15 years ago was employed at Church Farm,
Little Ouse, latterly by Mr. Flanders Morton.
The Friendly Societies Charities Committee allocated money collected on Parade Sunday as

5--Delegates from British Legion Women's Sections in Cambridgeshire and the Isle of Ely
met at Cambridge for their 14th annual conference. Mrs. G. Henshaw, of Littleport, was
elected to the office of Secretary.
6--A short service of memoriam to the late Mrs. Mary Dye was held at the Salvation Army
Hall.
The Rev. Jack Puntis, former local Methodist minister, conducted the evening service at
St. John's Methodist Church.
8--Monthly meeting of Littleport Women's institute. It was reported that Mrs. E. G. Hopper
had gained high marks for her entry of black currant jelly at the Dairy Show, London.
11--Annual "at home'' of Littleport Primary School. Speaking to the parents, Miss M.
Davy (headmistress) asked them not to worrry young children about what they were doing at
school, and not to worry themselves, either. "Let them paddle their own canoes"
she stressed.
Brian Hobbs, of Black Horse Drove, found a 3,000 years old Middle Bronze Age rapier near
the Ship Inn, Brandon Creek.
A marigold, grown by Mr. Djck Kerridge, of Bush Farm, measured 38 inches in circumference
and weighed 56 Ibs.
12--St. John's Methodst Church Christmas fayre. The proceeds for Trust Funds amounted to

13--Remembrance Sunday--Littleport's war memorial tablet, set in the wall of the Town
Hall, was re-dedicated after having recently had the names of the fallen in the 1939-45
war added to those of World War One. The Service was conducted by the Vicar, Rev. Canon J.

concert given by the British Legion Band in aid of Poppy Day fund.
15--There were 82 blood donors at a session held at the Primary School. This was a local
record.
17--Members of the local Trefoil Guild, now disbanded, made a presentation to their former
chairman, Mrs. M. Pope, who was leaving Littleport. Presentations were also made to Miss
J, Ducker (secretary) and Mrs. Goodfellow (treasurer).
18--It was announced that Mr. Alfred Saunders Pennick had been appointed manager of the
Littleport branch of Lloyds Bank Ltd., in succession to Mr. E, C. Hooper, who had been
appointed manager of the Bank's Branch at Biggleswade.
19--British Legion Women's Section held their annual Christmas fair and dance. The takings
amounted to £75.
House-to-house collections by members of St. John's Methodist Church, realised £34 19s.
3d. for the National Children's Homes .
23--Mr. Cyril Bedford, of Ely Road, Littleport, and Mr. Tom Peachey, of Crouchmoor Farm,
Black Horse Drove, miraculously escaped injury when their pick-up truck was struck by a
diesel express train at an unattended Drove crossing. The truck was a total wreck.
24--The guest of honour at a sausage supper organised by Black Horse Drove Women's
Institute, was Mr. Cyril Wickens, Clerk to the Ely Rural District Council.
25--Presentations were made to Mrs. M, Pope and Miss Doreen Bent, members of Littleport
Post Office staff who were leaving to take up new Post Office appointments. The
presentations were made on behalf of herself and the staff by Miss E. K. Brown,
postmistress.
26--A "Rainbow" bazaar, organised by the local corps of the Salvation Army, was
opened by Mrs. J. Carruthers.
Tony Roberts, age 13, a member of the British Legion Band, gained a third prize in the
solo class at the annual contest of the East Anglian Brass Band Association. He played the
solo cornet piece "I'll walk beside you"
27--Presentations were made at St. John's Methodist Church to Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Cross,
who were leaving Littleport. They had been faithful members of the Church for many years.
28--Funeral of Mr. Walter Whetstone, of Globe Lane. Aged 61, he was cremated at Cambridge.
30--After a period of only six months in Littleport, the Salvation Army Officers, Captain
and Mrs. J. V. Gosling, left to take up an appointment at Aylsham, Norfolk.
31--Firemen W. H. Chase and A, G. Goff, local members of the County Fire Service, were
awarded the Fire Brigade Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on completion of 20 years'
service.
