Just a short drive to the east of San Jose lies the Pacific Ocean and a coastline of fairly low-key but attractive resorts with spectacular sandy beaches and palm tree forests right up to the shoreline. We stayed at an excellent retreat called Villa Calletas near the town of Jaco. The coastal views here are spectacular, the local iguanas come into the grounds and will happily explore the terrace whilst you eat ! Breakfast of local fresh fruits overlooking the pacific. The pool at Villa Calletas is perched on the clifftop giving the impression that you could swim of into the sunset ! But, if you prefer, the beach is pretty spectacular too !

Twenty seven percent of Costa Rica is designated as National Park, biological reserve or protected wildlife refuge. One of the most popular with visitors is Manuel Antonio with its abundant birds, marine life and wildlife. It has miles of sandy white beaches shaded by trees in which the monkeys abound. There are many marked hiking trails and the park provides excellent snorkelling.
