NAMIBIA - Damaraland

PalmwagThe areas inland from the Skeleton Coast in the northwest corner of Namibia are called Damaraland (to the south) and Kaokoland (to the north).  There are a number of lodges in this area with concessionary rights over territory rich in wildlife.  Palmwag (left) is one of the best. Shown below is a herd of Mountain Zebra who looked suspiciously at our jeep during a game drive excursion from Palmwag.  This trip also delivered a rare daytime sighting of the normally nocturnal Aardwolf (below right).

A small spring at Twyfelfontein has provided animals with water for thousands of years.  The dubious nature of the spring gave the place its name (it means Doubtful Fountain). It is most famous for the ancient rock engravings (below) believed to have been produced at least 15,000 years ago.
