Generally accepted as being the world’s most dramatic waterfalls, the Iguazu Falls are made up of over 250 separate falls and are set in the exotic subtropical forests of the Parque Nacional Iguazu. The falls extend for approximately 2 kilometres as the waters of the Rio Iguazu superior tumble down the cliffs to the Rio Iguazu inferior. The centrepiece is the magnificent Garganto del Diablo (Devil’s Throat) where 70 metres of water pour every second over a semicircle of rock into the canyon below. On the Argentinian side, the falls can be viewed from an extensive network of catwalks. Whilst the falls are best explored from the Argentinian side of the border, the Brazilian side offers the best panoramic views and photographic opportunites and is well worth a trip. If you are visiting from the Argentinian side then the best place to stay is the Sheraton Internacional. It is the only hotel in the grounds of the national park and has many trails that mean you can simply walk from the hotel to the falls at any time without having to queue or wait for one of the miniture passenger trains that ferry people around the park. It’s easy to visit the falls by yourself but if you wish a guide then there are plenty available.

The falls area is full of orchids, ferns and palms, whilst millions of butterfllies of all colours fill the air. The area also has many birds including toucans, parrots and swifts. The Macuco trail winds through the forests and gives an opportunity to spot the various species of toucan and the shy capuchin monkeys. The best time to visit the falls is March to November when the temperature is not too hot. Although the combination of steamy heat, intense blue skies and sparkling spray in the summer may well also appeal to many people. You should plan to spend a few days here as you will need time to explore the falls from the various locations and also to explore the locality. The park gets very busy during certain peal times such as Easter and July when the falls can receive three thousand visitors a day.
