ARGENTINA - The Glaciers

Deep in the south of Argentina along the border with Chile lies the Parque Nacional Los Glaciers. This is where the Andes mountains meet the steppes and the lakes of Argentina. The glaciers that straddle the mountains carve their way spectacularly into the lakes such as Lago Argentina creating a spectacular sight.  The most famous of the glaciers is the Perito Merino.  As you approach the galcier by boat, you can see and hear huge chunks of ice breaking away from the body of the glacier and crashing into the water below.  These huge chunks of ice then float away as giant icebergs for many miles along the network of lakes.  Further afield but every bit as spectacular is teh Upsala Glacier. A lengthy boat trip is required to reach this glacier but it is definately worth the journey.

El Calafate is the main base for visiting the glaciers, lakes and mountains in this are of southern Patagonia.
