William was baptised at Birdbrook when he was two years old, but spent all his adult life as an agricultural labourer in the nearby parish of Ovington.  He married Elizabeth INCH at Clare when he was 19, and they baptised ten children at Ovington.  Elizabeth died in 1830 aged 67 and William remarried a widow, Martha PARKER the same year.  Martha had previously married an buried three husbands, but this time William outlived her; Martha died in 1836 and William then went to live with his married daughter Harriet MANN in Ovington.  William died at Ovington in 1849 aged 86.

BIRTH

From burial, census and death certificate age (all agree), William was born about 1762/3 (the 41 census has an age of 78 which is presumably not rounded down).  Although he lived and died in Ovington, there is no suitable baptism there.  The first AGER entry in the register is in 1784 when William witnessed a marriage.

Most adjacent and near parish registers have been searched but only one suitable AGER baptism found in nearby Birdbrook, some 4 miles from Ovington:

C 6Jul1766 William  s William  & Jane AGER  b 1Jun1764

No evidence has been found to confirm this is the right baptism.  However no burial of this William was found at Birdbrook, and the birth is the right name, time, and area; in the absence of other suitable baptisms, it will be assumed correct at present.

MARRIAGE

Parents of Harriet  AGER 4 were William & Elizabeth, and the first baptism to these parents at Ovington was in 1785.  No suitable William/Elizabeth m in Essex m index or in Boyd, but Boyd has a suitable m at Clare,SFK.  The banns book at Clare shows that William was of Ovington, proving that this is the correct marriage

from Clare (SFK) banns (n) and marriage register:

n 19Oct1783 William x AGER of Ovington ESS & Elizabeth x INCH otp; also on 26Oct 2Nov

m  7Nov1783 William AGER bch otp & Elizabeth INCH spr otp; wit: Thos STAMMERS John SPALDING

from Ovington register, William remarried 7 months after Elizabeth died:

B  6Feb1830 Elizabeth AGER of Ovington age 67 [b1763]

m 11Oct1830 William AGER wdr & Martha PARKER wid

INCH FAMILY

Elizabeth INCH of Clare was married there in November 1783 and her age at burial gives her a birth year of 1763.  There is only one possible baptism at Clare:

C 8Dec1767 Elizabeth d William & Elizabeth INCH

preceded by a suitable marriage:

m 5Nov1766 William INCH & Elizabeth SAINS

However, if this were the right baptism,  she would have been married just 15 years and 11 months after her baptism.  Her first child was baptised 15 months after marriage, so it was not a marriage forced by pregnancy.  If she were actually born in 1763 as indicated by her age at burial she would have a more reasonable marriage age of 20.  She may of course have been born at any time after or even before her parent’s marriage and baptised as a child rather than a baby.  Failing other evidence, it will be assumed that this is the correct baptism of Elizabeth.

Elizabeth’s father, William, was baptised at Clare in 1742:

C 25Sep1742 William s William & Ann INCH
