Helen was born about 1780, but her origins are not known. Possibly she was born in Dunblane daughter of William. In 1802, she married a carpenter, Roderick DINGWALL, in Glasgow Four sons were born in Glasgow but the first two died young. The family then moved to Perthshire in 1807 or 08 where Roderick was employed as a carpenter by the Earl of Mansfield at Scone Palace. Roderick and Helen had a further twelve children. The first two were baptised at Scone, the village close to the Palace, but between 1812 and 1826, Roderick and Helen lived at Bridgend. This village is just across the river from the City of Perth but still only two miles from Scone palace. They baptised all but one of their children at Kinnoul church, which is in Bridgend. In 1827, their eldest son William married and, like his father, became a wright at Bridgend. Perhaps because of this, Roderick and Helen moved back to New Scone where their last two children were baptised. Roderick remained a carpenter for the Earl of Mansfield until his death. In 1843 however Helen aged 65 slipped by the fire in her home and her clothes caught fire. Badly burnt, she was taken to Perth hospital, but died soon after. She was buried at Scone. Roderick moved down the hill to Old Scone, and three years later, drowned in a nearby pond. He was 73 and it was said that he was despondent since the death of his wife and probably took his own life. He was buried in Greyfriars cemetery, Perth. |

The 1841 census
has an age of 52 for Ellen, giving her a birth date of 1789; her 1843 burial
record gives the same birth date.
However, this is unlikely to be correct, as she would have been only 13
when she married in June 1802. Her last
child Mary was born 1830; so Ellen is most likely to have been born between
1781 and 1784, giving a marriage age of 18-21 and an age of 46-49 when Mary
born.
There are
many Helen BAYNE's born around this time.
Helen’s first children were baptised Thomas and William. Roderick's father is believed to be Thomas,
so Helen's father is probably William.
There are only two daughters of William named Helen in the OPR about
this time, and no daughters of Thomas, but both William daughters are a little
outside the range suggested above:
b 8Jun1779 Nelly d William BAYNE at Dunblane
(30 miles from Glasgow)
b
14May1786 Helen d William BAIN & Janet MACKAY at Glasgow

b 6Apr1785 James
b 6Apr1788 James
b 8Apr1792 Peter
(it is
not known whether these Dunblane baptisms are all to the same William, as the
Dunblane register does not give the mother’s name).
children
born to William of Glasgow:
b
14May1786 Helen
b
31May1788 Agnes
The Glasgow birth gives a marriage age of 16 so could be just
possible, but the names Janet and Agnes were not used for Helen’s own daughters
The Dunblane birth of Nelly (a variant of Helen or Ellen) gives a
marriage age of 23 and an age of 51 when Helen’s last child, Mary, was born so
this is perhaps more likely. The census
and burial ages would then be in error by exactly 10 years. On the other hand, Dunblane was in
Perthshire yet the 1841 census states that Helen was not born in that
county. Nevertheless, this remains a
possible origin for Helen but it is difficult to see where proof can be found
as Helen died before the 1851 census and 1855 civil registration.
Helen’s first
daughter was named Margaret, so a marriage of William of Dunblane to Margaret
would be some indication. The only
marriage in the OPR for William BAIN around 1770 at or near Dunblane is in fact
to Margaret CAMPBELL at Falkirk in 1770 (about 15 miles from Dunblane), but
these parents probably moved to Culross, as William Bain and Margaret Campbell
baptised children there from 1773 to 1788 after baptising Mary on 5May1771 at
Falkirk.

Woman
Burned. On Friday afternoon last week,
a respectable woman and mother of a family, residing in New Scone, accidentally
slipped a foot and fell over the fire, and before she could recover herself her
clothes became ignited and in a few seconds she was in a blaze from head to
foot. Her cries brought the neighbours
to her assistance who succeeded in extinguishing the flames, but not before the
poor woman was so dreadfully burned that she had to be immediately conveyed to
the Perth Infirmary where we hear little hopes are entertained for her recovery
"Death
by drowning". Early on Sunday
morning an elderly man, who had been in the employment of the Earl of
Mansfield, as a carpenter, for more than thirty five years, was found in a pond
or lake near Old Balbughty. It is not
exactly known how he came by his death, but as he was in a desponding way, and
he had been ever since the death of his wife, by her clothes taking fire, about
two years ago, suspicions are entertained that it was his own act.
