5 Anna BAIN 1764-1836

spouse's records

m John McLEAN 1787

Anna was born on a farm called Fornought about 1 mile from Fowlis Wester in Perthshire where she was baptised in 1764.

When she was 23 she became pregnant by John McLEAN, a ploughman on Gorthy farm, about 1 mile from Fornought, and married him in November 1787.  In February the next year however, when it became obvious that her child would be born in March, she and her husband were summoned by the church elders of Fowlis Wester and fined ten shillings for ‘ante-nuptial fornication’.

In all, Anna and John had five children born at Fornought and baptised at Fowlis Wester.  After 1800 however they moved some 25 miles south to the parish of Culross, Clackmannan, on the Firth of Forth where a son Peter was born in 1805.

Later, they moved back to Ruthven in the parish of Tibbermore, Perth where their daughters Helen and Ann were married in 1821 and 1823.  John died in 1834 and Anna in 1836 aged 72 while they were still at Ruthven.  They were both buried in Tibbermore churchyard, where their son George erected a fine gravestone to their memory.

BIRTH

Anna was of the parish of Fowlis Wester when she married in 1787.  There are many possible C of Anna in the OPR, but only one at Fowlis Wester:

C 8Apr1764 Anna BAINE d Patrick BAINE & Anna_HALLEY his spouse in Fornaught

Anna’s age at burial gives a birth year of 1764, so there is little doubt that this is the correct baptism.  Fornaught is only one mile from Gorthy where Ann BAIN lived after marriage to John McLEAN, and she baptised one of her children Amelia, as did Patrick BAINE.

Anna named her second son George, which should mean that Anna’s father was named George according to the Scottish naming pattern.  George BAYNE (wife's name unknown) baptised a daughter named Anne at Perth associated congregation in 1771.  The burial age however makes this ancestry unlikely.

MARRIAGE

the death certificate of Helen MCLEAN-4 (see below) gave her parents as John McLEAN and Anna BAIN, and the 1851 census gave her birthplace as Fowlis.  There is a suitable C of Helen at Fowlis Wester, preceded by the following marriage:

m 10Nov1787 John MCLEAN otp & Ann_BAYNE otp

DESCENDANTS

five children were baptised at Fowlis Wester; the first preceded by a rebuke from the church sessions since the child was clearly going to be born less than 9 months after the marriage; from the OPR index, another child to parents of same names was baptised at Culross:

from Fowlis Wester kirk sessions:

17Feb1788 compeerd John MCLEAN & Ann BAYNE in Gorthy and owned themselves guilty of the sin of fornication;  fined 10/-

16Mar1788 appeared in their usual seat and rebuked for antinuptial fornication and absolved from the scandal

from Fowlis Wester register:

C 29Mar1788 Amelia MCLEAN d John MCLEAN & Ann_BAYNE in Mains of Gorthy

C  4Jul1790 John MCLEAN   s John MCLEAN & Anne_BYNE his spouse in Gorthy

C 21Oct1792 Ann MCLEAN    d John MCLEAN & Ann_BYNE  his spouse in Gorthy

C 13Sep1795 George MCLEAN s John MCLEAN & Ann_BAYNE his spouse in Gorthy

C 20Jny1799 Helen MCLEAN  d John MCLEAN & Ann_BAYNE his spouse in Gorthy

from Culross register

C 11Aug1805 b 29Jul1805 Peter son to John MCLEAN & Anna BAYNE his spouse

There is no other MCLEAN entry in the baptismal register index at Culross covering the years 1687 to 1819, so these were newcomers to the parish; with parents of the same names and right date, it is safe to assume this was the same couple as at Fowlis, even though Culross is some 25 miles away.  John McLean was a ploughman, and it was not uncommon to move to where work could be had.

DEATH

Tibbermore churchyard has a fine gravestone erected for the burial of Anna's son George:

George MCLEAN in Ruthven Park d 3May1871 aged 75 years [b 1796]

father: John MCLEAN d 7May1834 aged 70 years [b 1764]

mother: Ann BAIN    d 6Apr1836 aged 72 years [b 1764]

sister: Emily       d 2Sep1850 aged 63 years [b 1787]

The Tibbermore register has the following burials:

B 10Aug1834 John MCLEAN from Ruthvenpark aged ---

B 10Apr1836 Mrs MCLEAN from Huntingtower

there must be an error to account for the excessive difference in date between the death and burial of John; probably a substitution of Aug for May or May for Aug, but the source of error is not known;  the register was extracted from  film of the original; the MI was from a transcription of Perth MIs at SoG
