6 Patrick BAIN 1728-?
m Anna HALLEY 1748

Patrick BAIN was baptised in 1728 in the parish church of Fowlis Wester, Perth.  His parents lived or worked at Carsehead farm about 1 mile from Fowlis.

Patrick married Anna HALLEY from the neighbouring parish of Methven when he was 20, but no baptisms were recorded until 10 years after their marriage.  They then baptised four children at Fowlis Wester between 1758 and 1764 while they were living at a farm called Fornought, close to Fowlis village.

No further records are known.

BIRTH

Patrick was of Fowlis when he m in June 1748 and he subsequently lived at a farm called Fornough in Fowlis Wester.  There is no suitable C of a Patrick BAIN at Fowlis, but a Peter BAIN was baptised there in 1728:

from Fowlis register

C 11Aug1728 Peter BAYNE s Patrick BAYNE in Carlshead Milton

Carlshead is only one mile from Fornough and Peter and Patrick are considered equivalent names, so this is probably the correct baptism.  It must be noted however that there are suitable C of Patrick in the nearby parishes of Crieff and Dunning:

Dunning  Patrick C  2Jne1723 s Patrick BAYNE & Elizabeth_KEDDIE

these parents married 1713 and baptised Ninnian 1713?, John 1719, Agnes 1721, Patrick 1723, James 1727

Crieff   Patrick b 16Jul1727 s Edward BAYN

Edward also baptised: Matthew 1721, Isabel 1723, Janet 1725, Patrick 1727

Crieff   Patrick C 23Mch1729 s John BAYN

at least two John BAYNs were baptising children at Crieff 1721-1739; but without the mother's names these cannot be sorted; no children were named Amelia, Marjorie or Ann

Dunning is some way from Fowlis, and the son of Edward at Crieff can probably be ruled out as the names Edward/Matthew do not occur at Fowlis.  The eldest known son of Patrick-6 was named Patrick, but there is a possible earlier son named John (see Descendants, below), so the Crieff son of John remains a possibility

MARRIAGE

At her baptism at Fowlis Wester, the parents of Anna BAIN-5 were named as Patrick BAIN and Anna HALLEY.  There is no m to these parents at Fowlis but there is a suitable m in the neighbouring parish of Methven, about 5 miles along the main road from Fornought and 6 miles from Fowlis.  Since Patrick was recorded in the Methven PR as "of Fowlis", this must be the correct marriage:

from register of Methven:

22May1748 Patr BAYNE in the parish of Fowlis and Ann HALY in this parish proclaimed in order to marriage 1

29May1748 BAYNE & HALY proclaimed 2

 5Jun1748 BAYNE & HALY proclaimed 3

DESCENDANTS

No C to Patrick BAIN and Anna HALLEY are found in the OPR index until the following at Fowlis Wester:

from Fowlis Wester register:

C  2Apr1758 Amelia d Patrick BAINE in Fornaught

C 23Mar1760 Marjory d Patrick BAINE in Fornaught

C  4Apr1762 Patrick s Patrick BAINE & Anna_HALLEY his spouse; in Fornaught

C  8Apr1764 Anna d Patrick BAINE & Anna_HALLEY his spouse; in Fornaught

The first of these baptisms is some 10 years after the marriage of Patrick and Anna was proclaimed and it is possible that up to 3 or 4 children may have been born in the period 1748-58 and either died before baptism or the record has been lost.  The only C to Peter or Patrick BAIN in the OPR index in this period are at Dunblane: James 1747, Mary 1749, Catharine 1751, Patrick 1753, Colin 1755.  Since James was baptised before the m and Dunblane is some way from Fowlis it seems very unlikely that these are relevant.  The Fowlis register is not defective in the relevant period but the Methven register seems missing 1752 to 1758 (though the OPR index has some entries); however, the period 1748 to 52 at Methven was searched but no C to Patrick found.

Two BAIN m at Fowlis may refer to the possible “missing” children of Patrick and Anna:

m 23Apr1773 John BAIN otp & Margaret_HENDRIE otp               [John bc1750?]

m 21Nov1779 John_WILSON otp & Catherine BAYNE otp  proclaimed  [Catherine bc1755?]

It is considered more likely however that John BAIN was the son of Patrick & Isabel (C1728 Fowlis son of Patrick) because he used the names Patrick and Isabel for his children even though this implies an age at marriage of 45 (see family tree T0).

There are possible parents for Catharine in nearby parishes: John & Ann of Blackford C John 1760, Cath 1758; John & Janet of Monzie C John 1749, Cath 1759.  The mystery of the 10-year gap between the marriage of Patrick and Anna and the baptism of their first known child remains unsolved.  Also why was she called Amelia?  The name persists through following generations, but this is the first known occurrence.
