5 Frances BAYLIS 1783-1875

spouse's records

m William YOUNG 1806

Frances was born in the Warwickshire village of Tysoe in 1783, but married a butcher named William YOUNG some 18 miles away in the Oxford village of Kirtlington when she was 23.  Her younger sister Hannah followed her to Kirtlington and was employed by a farmer also named William YOUNG but the relationship between the two men is not known

William and Frances baptised eight children at Kirtlington between 1807 and 1826 while William continued as a butcher in the village.  Around 1851 they moved for a short while to the neighbouring parish of Bletchingdon, but were back in Kirtlington by 1861.

They both lived to old age, William died in 1862 aged 89; Frances died in 1875 aged 93.  They were buried in the same grave in Kirtlington churchyard where their gravestone still stands.  Their unmarried son John became a butcher like his father and lived with them throughout their lives

BIRTH

According to the 1861 and 1871 census, Frances was born in Tysoe WAR about 1782.  The 41 and 51 census also have Hannah BAYLIS born Tysoe in the 1790s.  There are suitable baptisms for both BAYLIS at Tysoe, showing that they were sisters:

C 23Feb1783 Frances        d John  & Mary BAYLIS

C  3Jun1798 Hannah         d John  & Mary BAYLIS

MARRIAGE

Thomas YOUNG-4 was baptised at Kirtlington in 1812, son of William & Ann.  This baptism however occurs in a 5 year gap in a series of baptisms to William & Frances.  There are no other references to William & Ann, and no suitable marriage, whereas the baptisms to William and Frances are preceded by a marriage.  Moreover, Thomas-4 and his new bride Rebecca were living with William and Frances, together with their other children in the 1841 census.  The Kirtlington register at this time is available only in the Bishops Transcript.  It is concluded that the transcript entry of Ann is an error for Frances, and that the marriage of Frances to William is recorded in the Kirtlington register transcript:

m 15Oct1806 William YOUNG bch & Frances x BAYLISS spr; wit: E WALKER; W YOUNG
