|
John was born about 1755, probably in Broughton, Oxfordshire, son of William & Mary. He married Mary WIGSON in the nearby village of Tysoe, Warwickshire in 1776 and remained there for the rest of his life. John & Mary baptised 8 children at Tysoe and were both buried there, Mary in 1820 aged 62; John was probably buried in 1814 aged 59. |

There are
two possible burials of John at Tysoe, from which he was born either in 1751 or
in 1755. This fits with his wife’s age
as she was baptised in 1757. No
suitable baptism exists at Tysoe but there are many possible baptisms in the
IGI. 13 in WAR alone between 1747 and
1759. However the nearest baptism is in
the parish of Broughton in OXF about 7 miles from Tysoe:

Since John
baptised his second son William and his second daughter Mary and also used the
names Elizabeth Frances and Hannah for other children, and the baptismal date
agrees with the second burial age, this seems a very likely baptism. The presence of Frances BAYLIS as a witness
in 1801 is interesting. She cannot be
Fanny, the daughter of William baptised in 1763, as Fanny was married in
1788. Could she be Frances BAYLISS-5
baptised 1783 at Tysoe dau of John & Mary, and thus granddaughter of
William & Mary of Broughton?
Frances
BAYLISS-5 was baptised at Tysoe WAR in 1783, daughter of John & Mary. A series of baptisms to these parents at
Tysoe is preceded by the following marriage at Tysoe
m 2Nov1776 John x BAYLIS & Mary WIGSON
