Stephen was baptised in Paul parish church in 1744, and became a fisherman like most men of Mousehole. He married Joan CARNPEZZACK at Paul when he was just 21. A son was born five months later, but his mother died and was buried on the same day that her son was baptised. Two years later, Stephen remarried Joan MATTHEWS and they baptised two daughters Joan and Elizabeth at Paul. Stephen was only 25 when Elizabeth was baptised, but no further record of his life has been found. Stephen’s second wife died 50 years later at the age of 77; the absence of any further children after Elizabeth therefore suggests that Stephen died not long after her birth. As he was a fisherman, it is possible that he was lost at sea |

22Jul1744 Stephen s William & Elizabeth BLEWETT privately
Stephen is a relatively uncommon name, and this is the only suitable C at Paul, or in the IGI, and it gives him an age of 21 at first marriage. The private baptism suggests a sick child, but there is no Stephen buried at Paul until 1856
John Carn-5
was baptised at Paul on 4Dec1765, son of Stephen & Joan. The baptism is preceded by a suitable
marriage 5months previously:
m 1Jul1765 Stephen x BLEWET otp seafaring man
& Joan x CARNPEZZACK spr otp bb; w: Henry KEIGWIN, William HARVEY
Stephen is
not a common Christian name and identifies this marriage with confidence. From the records shown below however it is
known that Joan died before her son was baptised in December of the year they
were married. Two years later, a
further marriage of Stephen took place:
m 2Nov1767 Stephen x BLEWETT otp fisherman
& Joan MATTHEWS spr otp bb; w: William BARNES, Philip TONKIN
Although
Stephen was not noted as a widower, it seems almost certain that this is the
same Stephen. Only one baptism of
Stephen is in the Paul register before the first marriage in 1765, the timing
is correct for a remarriage, and it is known for certain that the first Joan
died.
the
following sequence of records from the Paul register, identifies three children
of Stephen, one by his first wife, and two by his second:
m 1Jul1765 Stephen x BLEWET & Joan x
CARNPEZZACK
C 4Dec1765 John Carne s Stephen & Joan
BLEWETT deceased
B 4Dec1765 Joan wife of Stephen BLEWETT

Stephen BOND
C
14Oct1770 Elizabeth d Stephen & Joan BLEWETT
there is
no burial of a Stephen BLEWETT in the Paul registers until 1856, which is too
late for this Stephen. As he was a fisherman, it is possible that he was lost
at sea.
Two burial
records of Joan occur in the Paul register, which almost certainly refer to the
wives of Stephen
B 4Dec1765 Joan wife of Stephen BLEWETT
B

CARN-PEZZACK;
the only suitable IGI C of Joan is on 10Jul1731 at Gulval (4 miles from
Mousehole), though this makes her some 13 years older than Stephen and does not
agree well with her age at burial
