William BLEWETT lived and died in Mousehole, but was not baptised there and may have been born in St.Levan, a port about 6 miles round the coast from Mousehole, in1713. He was probably a fisherman, like most men of Mousehole, and married Elizabeth BANDS at the parish church in 1733. They baptised seven children between 1734 and 1752. In 1770 and 1771, two of their daughters married sailors from the warship The Wolf. William was buried in Paul churchyard in 1781 a few years after the death of his wife |

William
was married in 1733 and died in 1781 so a birth date around 1700-1710 is
expected. The only William C at Paul
before 1733 however was C1721 son of John and there is no reason to suppose
that this was a late baptism (8 year old or more). This was the first BLEWETT family at Mousehole and may have come
from Padstow (see tree
TP). The baptism of William married in 1733 must
therefore be sought outside Paul. The
IGI has the following William BLEWETTs baptised between 1680 and 1716,
excluding C at distant parishes St Blazey, Launceston, St Germans:
C
16Nov1701 s William BLEWET at Madron
C
20Dec1706 s Will.BLEWETT at Gwinear
C
14Jun1713 s John BLEWETT at Saint
Levan
C
17Sep1716 s John BLEWETT at
Egloshayle
The Madron
William was buried there in 1716. The
Gwinear William may have married at Gwinear in 1756 though he would have been
50 at the time (see tree
TG). The Egloshayle William can probably be
excluded as he would have been only 16 years old at marriage, unless it was a
late baptism on the other hand, William named
a son Stephen and the only earlier instance of this name in the IGI occurred at
Egloshayle; also Egloshayle is near Padstow, and as mentioned above, there is evidence
of an earlier BLEWETT migration from Padstow to Mousehole; the forename Stephen
however probably derives from the BANDS family (see below)
This
leaves the St Levan William as current favourite, as he does not appear to have
been buried or married at St.Levan, and assuming a baptismal age of two weeks,
he would have been just 21 at marriage (see tree TL).
It should
also be noted that a William BLEWETT married Mary in 1695 at St Buryan, a
parish which is adjacent to Paul. They
might be expected to have had a child named William, but no baptisms at all to
these parents appear in the St Buryan register.
Stephen
BLEWETT-6 was baptised in 1744 son of William & Elizabeth. There is a
suitable marriage of William & Elizabeth at Paul 11 years previously and
the intervening period contains other baptisms to William or to William &
Elizabeth. There are no other parents
of this name at Paul in this period and the only other possible marriage of
William and Elizabeth in the IGI is at Whitstone far away in N Cornwall.

William BLEWETT was baptising children at Paul at this time so there is little
doubt that the first three children were children of William & Elizabeth
B 1Nov1781 William BLEWETT
This is the
first burial of a William BLEWETT in the Paul register and the next such burial
is in 1804 age 75 [b1729], which is a reasonable fit to William's son William
C1734 if the burial age were exaggerated by 5 years
B
14Jan1773 Elizabeth BLEWETT
B 1Feb1778 Elizabeth BLEWETT
These are
the only two possible burials of Elizabeth in the Paul register; one may be
Elizabeth's daughter, C1736, but there is no way at present of deciding which
is which.
