Mary BROMLEY was baptised at Braintree in 1688, but married Richard DUDLEY in Terling about 5 miles away when she was 21. Richard was also a newcomer to the parish. Richard and Mary baptised 8 children altogether at
Terling,, but at least 4 died young.
One of their sons was a blacksmith so it is possible that Richard was too, as this trade often
stayed in the family. Richard’s
burial has not been identified, but Mary was probably buried at Terling in
1761 aged 73 |

Mary
BROMLEY was married at Terling in 1709 so a birth date of around 1680 would be
expected. No suitable baptism was
found at Terling and in fact Mary’s marriage is virtually the only BROMLEY entry in a Terling register
index. Boyd has BROMLEY marriages at
nearby Witham and Braintree. A search
of these and other nearby parishes revealed only one possible baptism:
C
26Oct1688 Mary d Edward & Mary BRUMLEY at Braintree
this baptism
gives a marriage age of 21, and Mary’s first child was named Edward, a
relatively uncommon name. Braintree is
about 5 miles from Terling, and though unconfirmed, this origin of Mary seems
fairly safe
Richard DUDLEY 6 was baptised at Terling in 1718, son of Richard & Mary DUDLEY; several other baptisms to these parents are preceded by the following marriage:
m 26Apr1709 Ric DUDLEY & Mary BROMLEY
C 26Feb1710 Edw s Ric & Mary DUDLEY
C 23Apr1711 b14Apr1711 Eliz d Ric & Mary DUDLEY; B 20Oct1712 Eliza DUDLEY infant

C 28Dec1724 Mary d Ric & Mary DUDLEY age about 6m
B6Sep1725 Mary DUDLEY infant
C 28Dec1724 Wm s Ric & Mary DUDLEY age about 3
there is only one suitable burial of Mary DUDLEYat Terling:
B 4May1761 Mary DUDLEY
but this record could refer to either of two Mary DUDLEYs both born in 1749 so aged 12 at burial; these might have been noted as "child" in the register, but this is not certain. If the record refers to Richard's wife, she was aged about 73 at burial
There is only one possible Richard DUDLEY burial recorded at Terling:
B 25Apr1765 Ric DUDLEY
if Richard m at age 21 then he would have been 77 at this time. For reasons discussed in DUDLEY-6, however this burial is considered more likely to refer to Richard's son aged 47 than to Richard-7. There are no DUDLEY burials at Terling between 1725 and 1751 but the original registers do not seem to be deficient for this period
