Christopher Richard BROOKBANKS was born in the parish of St Giles London, where his father, Christopher BROOKBANKS was a baker living and working at a bakers shop in Seven Dials. His mother died when he was five years old and his father when he was nine and Christopher went to live with his grandfather. He became a plumber and glazier living at Grays and married Sarah Clarke from Chelmsford. The young couple moved to Kentish Town in London where they stayed for the rest of their lives, although they moved house frequently. He remained a plumber, but also described himself as a painter glazier and builder at various times. Some of the houses they moved into were newly built - this was a rapidly developing part of London - so perhaps he had a hand in building them. Their first five children were all girls, but three of them died in infancy and only Eliza and Jemima survived. Four boys were born next, but one died in infancy and one died when 16 years old. Frank emigrated to New Zealand when he was 22 and although he died young, he founded a large family of Brookbanks in New Zealand. Christopher followed his father and became a decorator and builder in Kentish Town until at least 1903. Christopher’s wife Sarah died in 1880 when she was 53, and for a short while his daughter Eliza became his housekeeper. Eliza married in 1881 and another daughter Jemima married Henry Pullinger in 1882 and settled in the original home town of Romford. With both his daughters married, Christopher himself remarried Caroline Clark in Islington in 1882. He remained a plumber until 1900, and after his second wife died in 1900, he went to live with his builder son Christopher in Rhyl St. He died 7 years later at the age of 79. |
