6 Christopher

 BROOKBANKS 1724-1773

m Ann c1760

Christopher was baptised in 1724 at Seven Stoke, a small village in Worcestershire on the River Seven, the son of Christopher & Mary.

He married Ann around 1760, but the record of marriage has not been found.  They baptised four children in the village of Pendock where Christopher was a yeoman farmer, some 9 miles from Seven Stoke.

Christopher died just after his last child was born and left over £300 for the education of his children.   Ann died 11 years later in 1784

BIRTH

Four children of Christopher & Ann are known, all baptised at Pendock between 1768 and 1773.    Christopher died in 1773, Ann in 1784 but no record is known giving their ages

The only possible baptism found so far is in 1724 at Seven Stoke, some 8 miles north of Pendock:

C 17Aug1724 Christopher s Christopher & Mary BROOKBANKS

assuming an infant baptism, this gives an age at death of 49, and baptisms between the ages of 44 and 49

Christopher & Mary also baptised other children: Richard and Ann at Seven Stoke and probably Mary & Isabella at Gt. Malvern.  Two of these names (Richard & Isabella) were used by Christopher and Ann for their children, which makes it likely that this is the correct baptism.

Some support is given by names of witnesses and executors of the wills of Christopher and Ann.  George NEED is mentioned in both wills, and Christopher’s mother Mary was Mary NEED.  John REDDING witnessed Ann’s will in 1784 and Daniel REDDING witnessed a 1700 BROOKBANKS will (see Christopher-8).

Pending further evidence, it will be assumed that Christopher-6 was baptised at Seven Stoke in 1724, son of Christopher and Mary.

MARRIAGE

Richard-5 was baptised at Pendock in 1770, son of Christopher & Ann.   Three other children of Christopher & Ann are known baptised at Pendock between 1768 and 1773.  The eldest was baptised as Kesther in 1768 and referred to later as Caster or Cester.  Ann’s will states that Caster was her eldest son.  A marriage around 1765 is therefore expected but no suitable marriage of Christopher & Ann has been found; it is neither in the WOR m index nor in the Worcester marriage licence index.

Claines is  3m north of Worcester and 15m north of Pendock.  William & Mary moved to Droitwich, 3 miles from Claines, and baptised their first two children Alfred Christopher and Mary Ann, supporting this William as the son of Christopher & Ann.

The unusual name Kesther/Caster identifies this m with confidence; no children of this m found in IGI but see below for further history of Caster

            wit: Christopher BROOKBANKS; Elizabeth TAYLOR

This Isabella is undoubtedly the daughter of Christopher and Ann since her husband John RICHARDSON was bound with Solomon GLOVER from Claines who was executor of Ann’s will.   After m they lived at Tewkesbury and baptised 6 children; the last was named James Christopher.  Tewkesbury is only 5m from Pendock

Both Christopher and Ann were dead by 1784 when the children were aged between 9 and 16.  It seems Caster (16) and William (9) went to live at Claines; Richard (14) eventually went to London (apprenticed there?), while Isabella went to Stourbridge.

No further records of Caster have been found after his marriage in 1799, but a Christopher BROOKBANKS lived at Stourbridge from at least 1816.  He was close to the family since he witnessed Isabella’s marriage there in 1803.  No records of this Christopher are known before this date and it seems almost certain that Caster was simply a pet name for Christopher and that after marriage he used his full name of Christopher.  Note that Caster was baptised in 1768 and was a grocer at the time of his marriage.  Christopher of Stourbridge was born in 1761 according to his age at burial or in 1770 from the 1841 census and was also a grocer.  Caster was the eldest son of Christopher and Ann and they had no other son named Christopher. Moreover, in the 1841 census, this Christopher of Stourbridge was with Richard BROOKBANKS 70 both born in Worcestershire.  It is concluded that Richard is Richard-5 from London, Caster/Christopher’s brother; Richard has not been found at his known addresses in London in 1841 and no Richard BROOKBANKS death was registered at Stourbridge.  Also present was Elizabeth BROOKBANKS who was probably Richard’s granddaughter, also Ann BROOKBANKS aged 40, likely to be Christopher’s last wife; the following marriages probably all refer to this Christopher (Caster):
